Anyone heard of TCS Torque Converters?

What Bill was trying to point out to me, and what I'm trying to make clear to you now is there seems to be an issue with torque converters in 4r70w automatics failing for "odd" reasons, and I don't think the "quality" of the linings in torque converters or number of plates is really the issue. I've sent SCT guy(Jerry) a PM at Modular Depot to try to get his input, but he hasn't responded yet.

I have a 1996 Tbird with a lightly modified 01 Mustang GT SOHC 4.6L V8. I am currently running the stock Mustang Torque Converter on the Tbird. The Tbird is equiped with a 4R70W transmission and a 3.73 Trak-Lok rear end. What I would like to know is, can I get a 3500 Stall Lock-Up Torque Converter( Like the factory one ) for this car. How much would this cost? How much to ship to Regina, SK, Canada? I would prefer the Street Edge series of Torque Converters!

A lot of the TC failures are due to faulty TC's. There is a line pressure mod that can be done to the 4R70W to help, but it won't save a crappy TC.
 
Ok. The email proves you emailed them and talked to them, but aside from that, what does that email prove ? You said you've seen WC/Edge converters fail before, but whose have you seen fail ? Please, any links to some articles or pics would be nice.

Second, what line pressure mod do you know of to help the 4r70w automatic ? Last I checked, the line pressure was controled by the EPC solenoid, and accordingly to Jerry's articles over at TCCOA, it is highly advised not to tamper with the EPC solenoid.

The big potential problem I see when it comes to adjusting line pressure is getting enough line pressue to the torque converter clutch, but not over-doing the line pressure with the other transmission accessories, which may be unavoidable. Remember, raising line pressure is like raising blood pressure. It won't just effect one part of the body, but the body as a whole unit.
 
You can modify the TCC pressure regulator circuit to force max line pressure to the lockup clutch when locking. This was recommended to me by a very close friend of JW's( SCT GUY ) and should be done to any 4R70W running a single plate TC. I don't remember how to do this though.

The user "Toombs" from TCCOA had one from Edge that failed. That one was not a "Street Edge" one though.
 
TGJ, thanks for the reply. I never knew about that mod until now. I'll do some research on it, and see what can't be done.

I'm in no way trying to bash anyone's torque converter products. I've had a Precision Industries torque converter in my car, and its been great other than the issue of the plate slippage. I've heard good things about West Coast Converters, with little negative feedback on them. From what I've seen, the torque converter they recommended for you(TGJ) in that email sounds like a solid built torque converter.

Is that to say that simply cause a torque converter "sounds" solid that means it will last ? Not at all. However, I don't care if you have the best built torque converter in the world with 10 friction plates. If you don't get the line pressue and TCC lock up timing correct, you'll blow ANY torque converter. I'm not saying that some peoples torque converters haven't failed due to crappy design. I'm just thinking its better to resolve the line pressure issue FIRST, then worry about bad builds.

In other words, lets not put the wagon before the horse. :nice:

I thought that too. I would have been the first to buy an Edge "Street Edge" TC on TCCOA. However, between some PM's on TCCOA and asking Edge some questions, I learned that a few things about that TC that turned me away from it.

Doing the TCC Pressure mod will not save an Edge or West Coast Racing Converter as the lockup clutch is smaller and weaker than the stock 4R70W unit. You did know that Edge is using a stock GM 245mm Lockup clutch in the "Street Edge" TC? If not, you do now.

I have done my homework, I am changing TC's for my new motor because eventually the single disc will no longer hold it.
 
Yes, I was aware they used a smaller torque converter clutch. I just don't know how much power it will hold. You have to remember the stock one is used to hold the stock converter, which is slightly larger, and much heavier than the converters put out by West Coast converters. How much that effects things, I'm not sure.
