Anyone installed 3 point seatbelts? I NEED HELP!

So I got some 3 point seat belts awhile ago from NPD (the company is Custom Accessories) and just got around to looking at the directions. MY GOD they are the worst directions I have ever seen in my life! I think the person was intoxicated when they put these wretched pictures and words onto a few pages. It really pisses me off when a company is too lazy to go the extra mile to make quality instructions with color photos and more detailed instructions.

Alright i'm done ranting. So has anyone else installed these in there 66 coupe? Maybe i'm just illiterate but for the life of me I cant figure out what these people are talking about. They dont give exact locations on where to install the "inertia reel," as they call it, to the floor board. They say to just "locate the ideal mounting location." Damnit where the hell is the ideal mounting location? And there instructions are for a convertible, I have a damn coupe! How do I attach it to the roof? haha alright I think i'm just stupid, but pleaaaase someone help me!!!!

t_chelle did a great write up in the Talk forum...do a search and you'll find it. I used her write up to install mine and tossed the manufacturer's instructions over my shoulder

I didn't even look at the instructions that came with mine (heck, I can't even remember if it came with instructions). Other than the 3rd/top mounting point (which I had to make) you just mount them where the original holes are. The side with the release button goes on the tranny tunnel (just behind the seat). The inertia reel (where the belt rolls into) and the other end of that belt goes on inside part of the rocker panel below the door. When you're doing that one, make sure you don't have the belt all twisted up.

Here's the link you need: http://www.customaccessoriesmfg.com/mustang.htm T-chelle's kit mounts the belt loop on the roof. The Custom Accessories mounts it on the quarter. The link I'm giving here used to be on the teenage author's personal web site, back when Pony Car Sales and Restoration was making this kit, before Custom Autocrap bought them out. If Custom Autorcrap is writing the printed install directions now, it's no wonder they suck and that they're worse than what a high school student posted up on the web five years ago.

Ya I went to their webpage, still ****ty directions on there too. The only reason I rather not install it on the roof is because I have a full interior in with a new headliner. So it would be hard to weld and not burn anything.

t_chelle, my directions show that they had to drill a hole for the inertia reel. On that webpage you can see where they are drilling the hole in the floorpan. The directions really dont say the exact spot for this hole.

Your car originally had lap belts, didn't it? The only hole you should have to drill is for the top mounting point. I don't know why the heck she drilled into her floor.

i basically just got some hardened bolts and figuted out how to do it myself. then just tack welded them to brackets etc.

I just installed them today. Took me all day but they are in and working! The only instructions I followed were cutting the slit in the metal, welding the nut to the washer (dont weld a locking nut, it just melts the locking part), and mounting the inertia reel. Otherwise it was pretty straight forward. Drivers side took awhile because I didnt know what to expect but the passenger side took only like 30-40 to do. I'll get a pic up of the final install tomorrow. Thanks for all the help!

Glad you got your belts installed.

I wanted to clarify a couple of things. MY original article that Chelle refers to (http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Strip/1121/seatbelt.html) illustrates a slit being used. I no longer do it that way.

The bolt and washer assembly can be fished up from the large holes found on the lower part of the sail panel (also normally covered by the headliner.) Just tack the nut and washer assembly to a long coat hanger or welding rod and go fishing. A little more tedious, but in the end faster than using my slit method and no risk of damaging the outer part of the roof.

By the way to anyone who is installing belts in a 65-66, you will not find the square hole that Chelle has on her 67'. Either use the slit or the fishing method.

The "fishing through the sail panel" method was mentioned (in red) on my site a long time ago.

Ya I saw that fishing method and tried it. I didnt want to take my headliner off any father back than the beginning of the quarterwindow. So I was having a tough time getting it up there. So I said screw it and made the slit. I didnt weld them back together because I have a full interior in right now. When I replace my carpet i'll weld them back together. I didnt know you made that site dennis. Thanks for making it! Here are some final install pics...

chelle, the reason that girl installed the inertia reel in the floorboard was that it needs to be level. When a vehicle comes to a stop, something about the inertia reel becomes unlevel causing the belt to stop coming out automatically. Or something along those lines. Just a FYI

Your seatbelt installation looks great--glad you found the instructions useful.

It was one of my favorite projects--wish I would have documented some of the other stuff like installing subframe connectors and such. Oh well, I prefer mechanic work over taking pictures.

Chelle has some great pictures on her site and I believe we've got some pretty good info out there on the web that is far better than what is included with any of the kits.

chelle is a lady Looking back I could have just bought a cheap kit off ebay and done the same install. Instead, me being stupid, bought the fricken expensive one from NPD.

A question for chelle, on your page you said you got some seatbelt deals for moving the seatbelt away from your neck? Well what are those called and where can I get them? Also, what did you guys use to stop the passanger belt from making that annoying smacking noise when the pass. window is open?

They're just seatbelt adjuster clips. I got them at Walmart in the automotive dept. I bought some nicer looking grey ones first, but they kept falling off every time I undid my seatbelt so I went to the black ones (not quite as stylish) and they work much better. They look like this:
