I'm getting one

I got in on the early preorder-to-gauge-interest list, and just placed my official order last night.

I plan on trying it with Flex-a-Form fiberglass leafs and a leaf spring slider setup, and if that doesn't yield the desired results, OR if the full 3-link is out and affordable before I get around to doing that, I may go that route. Worst case scenario, the fiberglass leaf and slider setup doesn't work and I end up doing the rest of the EvM kit.

I know that the Flex-a-form leafs are supposed to be stiff but I have also heard of them fraying at the ends, so this should free up that load. And I prefer to not have the leaf springs doing lateral work as well as up-and-down work.

Question:

I'm looking to build a nice touring style suspension, and having a 65 the IRS isn't really a feasible option, is this suspension more for the hard core racers and how would the ride quality be on the road?

If you're talking about the Watts link only, it will have no effect on ride quality. It will give you more precise turn in and cornering, because it will eliminate the hesitation of a standard rear leaf spring setup, where the body has to shift over the axle and compress the front eye bushings before it takes a set. It will probably add noise, because of the lack of bushings in the lateral links. And if you go to a delrin/aluminum front eye bushing, ride quality will take a big hit.

If you're talking about the three link, the coil-over springs will probably enhance ride quality in comparison to leaf springs. But the additional rod ends will add noise and harshness compared to a rubber-bushed leaf setup. It will also cost at leas $3000. (We see that Evolution undercuts Fays2 by about 10% on the Watts link; a similar discount on the $3500 Revelation Racing Supplies 3-link yields a ballpark of $3100 - $3200.)

Excuse me?! ~$3000...when a full rear suspension kit for a late model from EVM is $1325. Granted, shocks and springs are not included...but how do we get to $3000?

I would sincerely appreciate an APPROXIMATE cost from EvM...before I order the Watts link. RRS pricing is ridiculous, so I'm not sure that is a valid comparison. When I first read about this over on C-C, I got the idea this would be reasonably priced.

EvM: please give us some sort of ballpark idea.

I'm still waiting to be approved. Starting to get the feeling it's not going to happen =/. It's too bad, every post I've seen connected to that site tells me the whole group are dedicated to making their cars handle, and for the most part, incredibly intelligent =/. For myself, the main reason I registered, was to be able to respond with (hopefully) intelligent questions, until I could get enough on track experience to actually join the discussions those guys have. Again, thinking it's not going to happen. Got a feeling the moderator took offense to my user name or something =(.

I like the watts (same reaction turning either way) over the PHR....

SPEAKING OF PHR (pop hot rod mag) they have a great suspension article this month.

imho I would rather have a torque arm than a 3 link, but thats just me.... (same *basic* concept, but 3rd member is off the bottom of the rearend instead of top)

Any particualr reason/benefit???

OK....APPROXIMATE I can do. It always gets tricky when you put up a price before your protototype is even completed; however, I will try. First, it will not be $3500.00 and it will not be $1300.00....

Our three link rear suspension will consist of our Frame Mounted Watts Link, our TriLink, Lower Control arms and a frame mounted Rear Adjustable Stabilizer bar, and some rear coil-overs....Right now we are looking around the ballpark of $2600.00 for the whole shooting match....The TriLink will be a little pricier than our current setup because it will include the LCA's and a larger cradle structure to tie into our watts....

So, it should be quite reasonable....

Thanks....Mike

They could have taken offense? I know you need a "good" (not Hotmail.Com) email address when you apply for membership.

I was mostly teasing about the offense part, from what was put in the rules posted by Lewis =). I also used a Cox.net, but it's all good, my account was approved, and my user name was changed to Cris Anderson =)

Actually you can place the center link on the top or bottom. The main difference being, the center link is in compression (bottom) and not tension (top) under load (acceleration).

Mike, Will the three link be a "true" three link or a torque arm? Will the center link be centered or offset? If offset, is there a means of lateral adjustment? Will you be able to adjust the side view angle of the outer links?

Oh, and a question that is of personal significance to me, as I am modifying my car in anticipation for your three link. Assuming proper modifications are made to the wheel well, will the outer links allow for more wheel backspace over the original leaf springs?

All good questions...It will be a "True" three link, similar to our TriLink for the late model Mustangs.

Center vs Offset - Not sure yet. If it is offset it will most likely not be adjustable laterally.

As far as the outer links are concerned, there will ba adjustability.

We are still working out all the final geometries, so we will hold off another week or so before we get too heavy on all the details....Sorry for the incomplete answer.

Thanks...Mike

Im a fan of the maximum motorsports systems on late model stangs...

...other that some potential problems under reeeeal hard braking, I think they work well, for a *low* cost, and with the third bar underneath, they free up a little bit of space for exhaust/fuel pump/whatever... just my .02

No pics yet. We have most of the design done conceptually. Our first prototype is in the car, but we were sidetracked the last week with orders and putting the finishing touches on the Watts. In the next week or two we should be done with everything. When we get there I will post the pics.

Thanks...Mike

It looks as though the EVO looks lighter? But on the other hand, FAY's product has been there for a while and its proven...again, tough decision.
