WHY????

99+ GT brake (10.8") actually have a LARGER caliper than the Cobras. This includes more pad surface. They both have twin pistons and are about equally rigid. In short, there is NO advantage in using the Cobra caliper for you.

If you want to upgrade your brakes from there pads (porterfield, carbotech, etc streetpads) and brake lines.

I dont even need to read the reference to know that is wrong...I did the swap, I know....my car stops about 20 feet shorter now than with the GT brakes. Also with the larger rotor there is more surface area to allow longer time for cooling on the 13 rotor...My brakes dont fade at all anymore.
The problem comes in having to run the spacer for the skinnies to get around the 13 rotor...so i was researching the possibility of using a better than stock rotor instead of the 13". My brakes are the bullet brakes and they are larger than the stock GT ones I took off.

Wow, you are gullible. Granted you may get a different feel from the brakes, but I absolutely guarantee you don't stop 20 feet shorter.

You say your brakes don't fade at all, but I don't think you've ever put your car in a situation to experience fade.

So now you digress to calling people names.....WHATEVER...I dont care what you think. All I care about is what I've seen...in the mountains and at the drag trip...
You didn't contribute to this thread anyway...all you did is instigate. If you think I care what you think you got me confused with someone who cares...I'm out of here...and you can just be right...OK you are right I'm sure.

Yeah, you don't seem to care to learn & understand how brakes work or to even throw out realistic performance guesstimates. The fact of the matter is that you can lockup (or now a days trip the abs) with your stock brakes. Adding bigger brakes isn't going to do anything for you. To get to the point where fade become so bad that you can't requires a good 4-5 stops from 100-0 or so in succession. Chances are, unless you are on a road course or having a really bad day, you won't be doing this.
Now you see to be holding on to your incorrect beliefs despite all facts pointing to the contrary. Now if you want to throw away $400, that's fine. I'm guessing you don't. I'm just trying to make sure you have the facts before you or anyone else thinking the same thing pursue this any further.

Ahh....the drag strip, a test for any braking system.
Are there any mountains in Bama?

I believe I contributed the most to the this thread by debunking commonly held beliefs with real facts.

Hey, if you don't believe me, go take a trip to your local Ford dealer, and take a spin in a Mach 1. You'll see that the brakes have a tad more in ital bite (mostly due to the piston size differences), but stop no better than your '02 GT brakes.

For anyone actually wanting to make smart decisions, here are a couple of decent articles -

Could the stopping distance decrease be attributed to bleeding the brake system?

I plan to replace my lines with SS ones and bleed the brakes. I think this will give me as much improvement as a cobra brake swap. We'll see.

the only benefit from the 99+ Cobra/01 Bullitt brake system is less fade from the larger rotor. stopping distance will be the same. check out a few mags who performed measured tests; they're relatively the same. most people get the brakes for looks. (fills larger wheels better) remember recently installed new brakes always perform better then old worn brakes. so its hard to do an accurate comparison.

here is a pic showing that the +99 GT/V6 caliper is in fact larger then the cobra/bullit caliper:

One has to remember that the +99 GT/V6 Caliper is a newer design then the cobra caliper which was introduced in 1994. They are both made by PBR.

there was also a discussion awhile ago concerning adapting the GT caliper to a larger rotor, informative, but the idea seems to have died...

You probably shouldn't gain any braking distance from bleeding your brakes. The only reason you would is if you had an air bubble in your lines, which is unlikely. The real reason you bleed your lines is to intorduce fresh fluid into the system. Brake fluid attracts water, which lowers it's boiling point. Boiling brake fluid causes your peddle to go to the floor. Brake fluid traditionally asorbs moisture at 3-6%/ year. This 3% water can lower your fluids boiling point 15-25%.

I plan to replace my lines with SS ones and bleed the brakes. I think this will give me as much improvement as a cobra brake swap. We'll see.

I haven't done this, but you should notice a firmer pedal and better feel. I think you'll see a marked improvement, but not in the same areas as you would with the Cobra setup.

What some of you fail to realize is the Cobra rotor is a bigger moment arm than the GT because it's a larger dia. That's why it stops better. The GT rotor is lighter and the pistons are a tad bigger, but the brake line opening is also smaller than the Cobra.
All you guys that say people waste their money by doing this upgrade better call Ford and tell them the same thing.

No they all know too much.........
theres more surface area and the pistons are larger as well as the fluid access port....but I just aint arguing about it...I bolted them on and saw a huge improvment in braking.....period.car had 500 miles on stock brakes.

Personally I think if you're spending $400+ (about $60 for lines) you're better off saving and spending the extra $500 to get the 4piston kit. You already have 2piston calipers so you're getting size and a little bit of a better heat dissipation(sp?), but with the Brembo 4pot upgrade you're at least getting more braking power with the extra pistons.

I agree, but I just waiting for someone to finally make a 13" retrofit bracket for the front GT calipers to mount on 13" rotors. It appears a 13 inch rear bracket for stock rear calipers is available now for GTs...

I remember seeing the bracket somewhere, just dont remember exactly where though... I'll keep an eye out though if you're looking for one.
