anyone own a 4x4 ranger?

i'm selling the Z to buy one.. working in the junkyard and having to borrow a junk car to drive around is a pita.. so im just going to pick up a 4x4 truck so i can just drive off without having to pull my tools out one car and chunk em in another.. how do these trucks do? they hold up to anything? i'll throw on a lift kit and all to boot.. redneck er up anyone got one?

A 4x4 Ranger is the next vehicle I'm going to buy...I wouldnt buy an S10 or Sonoma, myself.

A ranger or a s10/sonoma is a good choice. I've heard many stories of the rangers holding up good, and the 4 banger sonoma is as reliable as a rock too. My cousins has 215k on it, went through 2 16 year old drivers, never had a set of plugs put on it until around 200k, the injectors leak pretty good, factory clutch, and it still knocks 25mpg down. The only problems it had was the A/C and the original fuel pump knocked off a few weeks ago.

Rangers are the best car's my family has ever had.

I am going on 70,000 miles with my 2001, 2.5 liter I-4 5 speed and have yet to have any major problems. I have only done a front brake job, IAC, Plugs and the PCV valve beyond the typical oil changes. It runs as good today as it did new. I paid $9,700 for this truck new and it blue book's at about $7,000 now

My brother had a 1999 4x4 with the 4.0 V6 automatic. He lifted it 6" and had 33" swampers on it. The only problem he had was a new tranny and seals in the motor at about 100,000 miles. He sold it 3 years ago with about 175,000 miles on it. The guy that bought it from him just sold it with about 260,000 miles and had no major problems. He still sold it for about $5,000.

Long story short, I think they are great little trucks that can take a beeting if you take care of them and as a benefit they seem to hold their value!!!

If you are going to be on flat roads..the 3.0L may do you just fine. Other than that...good truck for hauling the kids baseball gear around.

I love my Ranger, carry the canoe, go camping, carry two MTBs correctly, load up the YZ, and throw the dog in the back no sweat.

The 3.0 has no HP and even less torqque, but it does the job, and it's a 5-speed to boot!

Stay far far away from the 3.0. My 2.5 I-4 has about 5 less HP and gets about double the mileage. I bought my truck and at the same time a friend bought a very similar truck with the 3.0. We raced and I was able to keep up till about 50mph. The point being either get the indistructable 4.0 or the indistructable 2.5.

Some guy on here had a whipple kit on his Ranger that he swore could smoke his Mustang.

Throw Dual Cam SHO heads on there, and you are set to go.

My brother has a 94 4x4 with the 4.0 and a 5-speed. Truck is actually very fast and averages high teens low 20 with mostly highway driving. He bought it for cheap and had to replace a few things, but so far so good.

I have a 2001 Ford Ranger 4 X 4 offroad supercab with the POS 3.0 and have not had one problem with it ever... I love my truck

I have a 96 4.0 4x4 super cab. 63,000 miles. I love the truck. Gets around 20 mpgs. Quiet comfortable ride. I have had some problems...nothign too major though. Had a fuel filler neck hose crack, so I picked up a junkyard one for 20 bucks. Also had a hub go bad. And it popped a brake line, lol. Other than that though. it's running like a champ now though. I love the truck. Actually like working on it almost as much as the mustang.

i have a 99 ranger 3.0 4x4 ex-cab with 31.5 inch tiresand an 1.5 inch lift. i wsh i would have got a 4.0 liter but i needed a truck at the time and i bought it. there good trucks, u throw anything at it and it takes it like a champ...also mine comes with 4.10 gears from the factory..if it had a 4.0 i wouldnt be worried about tring to sell it. best mpg i got with it was 17.1 city/hwy.

I have a 99 Mazda B-2500 damn good truck, I have 123,000 on it still kicking like its new. I get between 24-29 mpg depending on the city highway mix. only thing that I will need to do in the future is fix a small exhaust leak. But look at mazda pick ups while your at it sometimes they are cheaper than rangers even though they are identical.

The 4x4 ones are actually QUITE good off road. 2 of my buddys that I go muddin with have em, they are real light and can get through mud like noones business, they don't have much time to sink, being as light as they are. They both have 4.0s, great reliable trucks!!

i have a 2000 ranger 4x4 offroad, with the 4.0. it gets pretty decent gas milage in the city and highway. like most people have said they are pretty damn good off road, i have taken mine off road at the lake going into lakes that have no cabins and no real land access to them (great fishing!) all the roads are old logging trails that are really rough and some swampy parts and my ranger did awsome through that. i have also taken it off roading abit just outside the city for fun.

i was torn between a ranger and an F150 and i am glad i chose the ranger, i don't need full size truck right now

-i would try to get a '90-'97 4x4 with a 4.0, (2.9s last forever but they tend to be week on the highway and heads may crack)
-the pre-'98 have TTB and are cheaper to lift (if thats your thing) than IFS
-90+ have the dana 35 front axle instead of the dana 28.

i had a '89 4x4 (traded to my dad) and still have a '91 4x4(4"skyjacker lift, 3" body lift, 32" tires).

both have over 200k on stock 2.9s. my dad still drives the '89

but due to the gasket leaking around the shifter(5spd), i burnt up the tranny in the '91, while 4wheeling, so its getting a 5.0.
