lately i have been wanting to tone myself up and get in shape and eat healthy.

first thing i did months ago was cut out all sodas and stuff. i may have one at the movies maybe but thats it. i drink water, milk and gatorade ;D i am suprised the difference just from that. i used to get bloated and feel fat after soda.

shortly after i started doing pushups when i got bored. i have been doing them for almost a month, i have noticed a gain, i can do more than i could starting out. i recently added curls too. noticed a gain there also. i cant do much other that really no real room or weights. once i get some more time i will do more exercise.

for 2 weeks or so i have been reading on walking a running. this morning i started. i walked some for like 3 mins and ran for 1 just alternating. my legs are sore already. i plan to do that every other day for a couple months and try to improve.

started eating a better breakfast also. eggs and wheat toast and milk.

im 6'3" and weigh around 220-230, im not fat just a big built person, born that way. i hope to turn some excess fat into muscle and improve my look.

just seeing how u guy got started on all this stuff. like running and stuff it seems like it will get hard. just seeing if you guys had and tips i could use to get started and get a routine going.

well i used to run x-country and loved it until my knees couldnt handle the 7 miles a day, so i stopped. I dont know what i can do to build them up either? Just pace yourself is the only advice i can give. Also do strides after you run, which is where your running about 75% with stretching your legs out as far as they can go. It might look kinda funny but it helps. Do about 5 sets of 100 yards. Also STREATCH AFTER YOU RUN. it really helps the soreness. yea for sure get off the gatorade, get water with electrolytes. If you can hear the water gurgle in your stomach its not good. It means that your body is not absorbing it.

Remember to stretch, and if you want to get bigger (muscle build) eat after you work out. Do less reps and more weight, or if you want to get toned do the opposite (more reps and less weight). Just remember if your going to be running or working out, your body will perform crappy if you are not eating/hydrating enough/correctly

Correct! 'Toning' has nothing to do with lifting weights and everything to do with 'cardio' and 'diet'

I also used to run cross country, my main thing was shotput and discus, so I worked out alot for a good 4 years while I was doing that. When you get done running, dont just stop, keep walking for 5 minutes or so to get your heart rate down, and always stretch before and after you run or lift. A few months ago I got back into body building and Im already bigger than I used to be, Im going to start running again this spring when it warms up a little.

Yup, but my point was moreso that the misconception of "high reps/low weight = toning" is just ridiculous.

Like Viking said, when it comes to cutting down, what you do IN the gym is pretty much last on the chain of importance as far as results. Many people can even do it without bothering with cardio, and just upping their intensity IN the gym (more intensity = quicker heart rate = more fat metabolized!)

last winter, I ran 5 days a week for 3miles but I was taking it easy you can over do it and be in pain. If you start out sprinting and your not in shape you can get Shinsplints which are extremely painful I had them this past summer and couldnt even walk. just take it slow and pace yourself, start out with some jogging/walking then turn it into a full jog/run I lost over 60lbs from running/cutting out soda and eating salads and not snacking.

A friend of mine that I used to lift with blew up his knee while running, so now I use an elliptical machine so there's no strain on my knees. I'm not saying you should do the same, but always be mindful of how hard training is on the body, and sometimes it doesnt always bounce back.

Diet and nutrition are exponentially more important than work done in the gym. Although you need to focus, squeeze, be determined and push yourself in the gym, NO (Abosolutely no) results will be obtain noticible without proper diet/nutrition. Also, about that rep crap, higher reps dont mean necessarily 'toning' or 'cutting up'. Low reps, high weight will increase strength (2-6 reps per set). Slighty more reps slightly less reps (6-10 reps) and you'll see imporvement in strength (although not as much as low reps) , but also much more mass. Any higher reps (10+ per set) could be considered maintenance, such as for an offseason bodybuilder, or overall health lifts, like the route many woman like to take. Toning and cutting reaveas muscle you ALREADY HAVE. You can't build a cut (you lift to build muscle, and you diet to remove fat and show that muscle.)

Although its not alot, it's still empty calories. Also suger in those drinks will kill you. take a multi vitamin and eat right and you wont need the 'rejuvinating' effects of Gatorade or Powerade.
