just purchased the full kit ($995 one) for my 66 coupe project (302 crate motor coming today with AOD as well).

Anyone use this exact kit (there is a standalone one that is different)for their car? Any likes/dislikes/opinions on the setup? It is the exact fit model with the fan kit included.

thanks

Dislikes: Price!!!! OMFG

You can get a generic AFCO aluminum radiator for $180. AFCO also makes drop in units for ~$450.

Automatic, High Performance Griffin's are available from Street or Track for $549.

on the $450 drop in, does it comes with the fan(s), mounting hardware and anything else needed in one package?

I am using this with a 380 HP motor, A/C and automatic. Don't know if this makes a difference.

Prices I quoted were for the radiator only. They do include mounting hardware. Check out the AFCO site for more details.

BTW... I double-checked the AFCO price for the '66 and the price is $550.

There are a couple of guys on this board that have installed the generic $180 aluminum racing radiator with just some simple mods so you may want to check out that route as well.

For an economical fan, you can use a Taurus fan from a junk yard. Here is a good article from Ford Muscle...
http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2003/02/electricfan/index.shtml

I picked up a fan at Ecology Auto Parts at a 1/2 price sale for next to nothing. They are rated at 2000 cfm. That plus about $60 in hardware for electrical and you are set.

$180 for a generic Radiator
$100 for a generic fan
+ some easy fabrication
adds up to big savings!!!

Save the $620 for more power mods!

What part number from AFCO did you use and what water pump are you currently using? This is on a 302...correct?

I don't have specific part numbers. I just remember reading a post here that someone had used a generic AFCO radiator. There are tons of standard radiators in this price range, include double pass radiators for $220. Some are too wide for the '66 without modifying the battery location and trimming the radiator support.

Something like this could work for a manual tranny: Link

I saw that one...but my concern is the inlet and outlet. What water pump are you using? My inlet and outlets are on the same side for my OEM radiator.

I have have a HD 3-row in mine for now. I won't replace until I get everything back together and determine if a new one is necessary.

The above radiator would require a '70 water pump which has the inlet on the driver's side -OR- reverse rotation water pump and serpentine system -OR- a custom lower tube that crosses the distance.

Here are a couple of threads to research:
http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=458584&highlight=afco+radiator
http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=455016&highlight=afco+radiator

This is an AFCO in a '69 from this thread.

Aha... this is what I was looking for:

I'm using the exact kit, the $1000 Aluminum Be Cool Radiator and electric fan and I LOVE it, it keeps the car insanely cool, on the C constantly and I've never had a heating problem. BTW I have a 1966 Mustang w/375HP 302.

Looks like a quality setup you've got. (I just had a look at their site)

Does the kit come with a thermo switch to turn the fans on and off?

EDIT: Ok I looked a bit harder and answered my own question.

There's a temperature sending unit that goes into the intake manifold, it automatically turns itself on at 195 degrees. You can easliy wire in a manual switch though.

Those Be Cool are pretty sweet. I could only afford the radiator though. IT is really nice.

I see that after buying the radiator you went broke and couldn't afford some wire looms.

Here is my $170 set up including electric fan that is actuated by eec when it reaches specific temp and then switches off when the temp drops. 190 on 180 off to be exact. This is on my 67 coupe.

here we go again.....

there are looms in there, but when dealing with something bigger than a gnat's a$$, it gets a little difficult to run everything nice and purty.
