Ill try to provide as much detail and info on what ive done what the problem is etc.
Its been a ongoing problem now for 3 years. The car doesnt like to start when its hot. It will start up everytime when its cold and often will after you let it sit for an hour or so even if the engine temp is still 190 degrees or so. The starter wont even bump the car hardly...it doesnt even really click.
Im on my third starter now, its a stock mini starter and is the kind where you have to splice into the original wire and then heat up the plastic sleeve to seal the connection. The first starter I had replaced at a shop (b/c I was in an appartment) and for what its worth the guy said "you dun burned dat starter up, the timing was way off" He said it was 17 degrees but I know I set it at 14 before I took it to them. The second and third starters I replaced myself. I didnt have any electrical tape and I was trying to install it without jacking the car up (so my landlord wouldnt see and kick me out; no working on cars is allowed), well I ended up screwing up the plastic sleeve and had to use duct tape to seal the splice (might be my problem lol) but keep in mind this is the same problem Ive been having long before the duct tape. Nothing new was really done to the car when this started happening....i.e. the headers/exhaust were on long before this happened.
When you try to start and its hot the negative batt cable gets hot enough to actually start smoking but Im sure this has to do with the resistance in the wire from the car not starting. At one time I had a 105amp one wire alternator, but as of now I have a factory one back in place. I have also replaced the starter relay as well. Another side note.....sometimes when I wiggle the relay, and have someone try to start it will start. I know the relay has to be grounded to the frame for the car to start. It has to make contact with the frame, well normally you have the screws holding the relay in place and down tight. Someone stripped the screws and I cant find anything that will really tighten the relay down (Any suggestions? ) If I had a welder and knew how to weld I would just weld the hole and retap it....would jb weld work just as good? That stuff seems to hold well but I dont think it would thread very well.
I guess first things first...Im going to check the timing, rewire the starter (have a garage now) and try to find something to hold the starter relay down
