anyone who has built a 4.6 please come in

Ok I have been thinking about building a forged engine on the side because Iam a huge do it yourselfer.

Has anyone here built a brand new 4.6 romeo or cobra block and built it up? If so did you have any issues with the cross hatch cylinder hone and the rings you decided to run? Or did you have any piston to wall clearance issues when buying std. bore pistons? I am trying to build a brand new engine without having it machined.

the idea is to build a stout engine on the side. and let me be verry clear that I do NOT want to get a already built short block even though it will probably be cheaper. I want to build this thing myself over time that way I know exactly what went into it. thanks.

I had a romeo, and my engine builder recommended that I start fresh with a windsor. He said the design of the windsor was better because of the solid maincaps, and that the block would take more horsepower with a boosted car. I am not sure if this is true, but I took his advise and so far so good at 576HP.

(99-00) windsor (96-98/01-04) romeo. Windsor's valve cover's have more bolts, and cam towers are singular in design while Romeo's have two ajoined sections.

Actually 96-98 blocks were Teksid aluminum blocks made in italy (same company making ferrari blocks) and is the strongest out of the teksid, windsor, and romeo blocks plus MUCH lighter then the romeo block. I think it weighs around 80-90 lbs, Sean Highland Motorsports has pushed it to put out 1500 hp with some reinforcement and I believe is now trying for 2000hp... anyway if you want the strongest block teksid is the way to go

Doing the 4.6 isnt hard, just different!! IF you follow the manuals, you will have no issues. I suggest that you read the history and manuals your self... as there is a LOT of incorrect HYPE out there that seems to hold FEAR in the minds of the hobbest Builders!! For the best Alum blocks.. get them from the pre-99 linc. T/C. no front wheel drive. IF you have a Alum block, that has re-enforcement ribs in the center, and look beefer than he@@.. you have the Late model Windsor Alum Products (WAP) and they are WEAKER than the t/c engines!! and are said to be good for 600 HP as the Italian T/C blocks are good for 900+ HP!! The WAP blocks will have a "W" cast on the block!

Crankshafts.. there ARE 6 bolt cranks out there that ARE steel!! However Most all the 8 bolt cranks are steel!! They DO offer crank kits for the steel crankshaft.. which makes them real affordable!! H-Beam rods.. and a good forged piston and you into the bullit proof engine!! The MOST comon failure WE have seen is do to over boosting the pistons, and detionation!! SOOOOooooo.. a good tune is a must!!

Alum blocks.. bore and hone WITH deck plate!! DONT go over .030 bore size.

Have fun....

Just me...........................................................................

I don't think you can just buy new parts and put a built motor together without machine work.forged pistons run with more ptw clearance than stock and are prone to a cold knock if not done properly or will scuff/freeze without enough clearance. moly rings require a finer hone than what you get on a new block. the rotating assy needs balanced(unless you buy one already balanced). etc.

I talked to mmr and they told me that the 03/04 cobra block the sell is already properly machined for the correct PTW clearance. and I doubt I will use moly rings. what is the bennifit of moly rings anyway?

I am sure if you buy a block from a company like mmr it will come machined for your purpose,I was refering to a new block purchased from ford. moly rings have a better seal with less friction= hp

pCaKes - The Teksid block was in the 96-98 Cobra's, not the Gt's. The latter was iron as well.
