Anyone's BBK LT's rub the steering shaft.

I havent posted in a while, usually the search feature works but it isn't working so I have to ask.

Anyone have clearence issues with BBK lt's and their steering shaft. Im not to keen on buying the smaller one from flaming river because they charge somewhere north of $100 for one.

If anyone can help on how to solve this issue it would help a ton. I got in there with a drill and sanding bit and ground down everything that would touch (Header, and steering shaft) but still it brings a hesitation in the steering wheel when I turn. And they still touch. The only time they dont touch is when I am somewhat on the throttle which is expected because the motor will rotate just a bit.

I also had some one chamber flows welded in. My god, they are so quiet in comparison to the SLP. I gotta get sound clips for you guys.

You'll sand a whole in the pipe before you get enough clearance. I used an impact socket with an extension as a handle and dented in the pipe to make a 'relief' for the steering shaft. No problems since

I tried to get a hammer up in there to dent it in but had no luck.

Did you use the socket and extension with the use of a hammer to dent it?

Yea i would like to know how you put the dent there also....maybe put up a picture so could do it BEFORE i get the headers down there

I've had my BBK LT's on for about a year and havent had one problem with them yet

Not at all. Here's a little trick, unless you already done this. Depending on your miles on the car, you could change the motor mounts. Mine sits a little higher since I put my Energy motor mounts so it will clear more the shaft.

Makes sense ?

I had the same exact problem on my blown 93 notch.The BBK longtubes and the steering shaft were rubbing tight!.Every turn i made,the steering wheel would tighten up,and that awful squeky noise.I Tried every thing, hitting it with a hammer,sticking a solid pipe and putting body pressure for clearance(no luck espicially when steel is cold!!),even the drilling method,BUT no LUCK.So i just tought about it,and i came with a solution,or took the car down to a problem fixer!,lol.I took it to a muffler shop(that utilizes high temp torch) they jack the whole car up,i told the guy what problem i was facing.He then got the torch,heated the one header tube,and steering shaft that was making contact, to a certain point>when it got so hot(not to hot to make damage)(where now metal becomes soft) he then got a solid steel pipe of some sort,and moved the steering shaft(which was hot,including the one tube header that was making contact) a little towards the left,like about a 1/4 of a inch of clearance. Ever since then,it solved my problem and costed me 15 bucks. JUST be sure to be cautious when dealing with high temp torches around engine components,brake fluids,or any flammable fluids,espicially GAS! Hope this works,it worked for me.P.s,i can take a pic where they heated that one header tube and steering shaft,if you want for an idea..laters

Definately post a pic. I was thinking about letting the car run for a while before getting in there and hammering away but I would burn myself so easily trying to get my hand in there.

i guess some bbk headers l.t are not made all the same exact dimensions,lol.I will post pics tommorrow around lunchtime, and pin-point where they heated the steering shaft and header tube that made contact.

Perhaps. There are also other factors that may play a role, for example motor mounts. And perhaps different heads have ever-so-slightly different locations for the headers. Stack the tolerances and then some people will get interference while others will not.

yup,you're definetly risking some sort of injury>i would rather recommend that you take it somewhere where you can jack the whole car up in the air,and work on the car freely and easy access to the steering shaft/longtubes on the bottom end(you'll see what im talking about).Like i said before,i tried those methods,and it was a pain in the ass working in such tight condition because of the battery location,brake reserve,and lines,and well the space! lol.

Mechanix gloves . I used them when I was doing dynamic compression testing on my GT, which requires getting very close to the headers while they are scorching hot. The gloves give you two or three seconds of direct contact with the headers before the heat comes at you full force. As long as you're not planning on resting your hand on the header, they work great.

Socket on the extension - held against the header where the steering shaft passes through and then another person with a hammer & long extension coming in from the wheelwell.

The headers are off the car now. I'll try to get a picture up in the next couple of days.

pic. The third header tube was the one rubbing with steering shaft. Im all stock with no aftermarket heads,cam,nor intake,only a vortech blower.I pointed an arrow where they heated the header tube and steering shaft,it only took a sec. to give it a little push with a steel tube,for clearance.THe whole procedure took less than 5 minutes, with a simple torch,and a steel tube.
