Ok. My brother has a 91' Gt with the aod. Shifts great, firm and such but, when crusing in OD he nails it and it takes 3 seconds to downshift to drive, then 2 -3 more seconds to accelerate. No slipping, no bogging, downshifts perfect from all other gears....Help. I have a 5speed so I don't know the aod very well.

It's normal. I was just noticing today how overdrive shifts so much slower than the other gears.

how many miles are on the trans? I was gonna say the valvebody could use a rebuild or to flush the trans.

I think I'll just replace the valvebody with a performance one. All shifts are positive with the only exception being the od downshift.....no slipping tho.

My overdrive took around 4 seconds to upshift from 3rd, and a little less to downshift to 3rd manually. I changed the pan fluid and the filter and its smoother and a little faster now.

previous owner installed a shift kit and non lockup converter in my car...it upshifts to OD very quickly and firmly but when i kick it down it shifts out of gear quickly but does take a sec or two before it accelerates...its like downshift then.............bam accelleration....it pulls pretty damn hard from a 60mph

the non lockup converter is totally different from a stock setup. but the downshifting and upshifting on a stock aod sounds pretty normal. Ford designed in some lag to save the gears and such inside the case. Remember, the aod was also built for old ladies in town cars and marquee's.
