My 87 GT will not go into first or second gear when shifting it manually so I tried adjusting it down were the cable attaches to the tranny but it seems the cable is to long if I adjust it to were it will go into first then it won't go into park and vice a versa so is there a way to adjust the cable it self or does the cable stretch over time and now I need a new one?

Sounds like a shifter problem, not a cable problem. Is it a stock or aftermarket shifter?

the shifter has full range of motion

I'm not sure of all the parts involved but perhaps there is a worn bushing or connection point at either or both ends.
