Ok... so I have a 1991 Mustang LX 5.0 with an AOD tranny.

When I place the shifter in drive, the engine will rev freely until it hits about 2,000 rpms... then it will either slam into gear or slip into gear. Once its in gear it shifts fine...

Except for coming from OD to Drive. In order for it to engage drive after being in OD I have have to bring the RPM's up.

Any Ideas?

Maybe the linkage needs to be tightened where it meets the tranny? It might be loose and not fully pulling into drive but once you rev it up the vibrations might make it pop in? Just an idea to check and it would be a free fix :) Other then that, I have no idea.

Ok.. so now it wont go into drive at all.. Reverse still works... but 1 D or OD and the engine just revs freely like its in neutral... There are no noises at all, its exactly like being in neutral.

I can't say it's your problem, but I had a similiar occurrance with mine a few months ago.I pulled the valvebody, and on a VERY clean work area (surgically clean !!!),I took the valves out cleaned them and reinstalled them ONE AT A TIME (so they don't get mixed up),paying very close attention how the springs and pieces are installed. After a thorough cleaning, the car shifted like new.Been great and taking abuse ever since.Perhaps that helps.Good luck.
