hey guys... i think i have a problem with my aod... let me explain.... when i first got my 67 stang the owner put in a tranny from a 89 stang.he got an AOD tranny and rebuilt it. First of all, from idle to 60mph, i am only feeling two gears shifting, which means that its only shifting to 3rd? maybe?? BUT! sometimes.. when i punch it i feel all four gears shifting..?? weird. From what ive been observing, from idle it seems like the tranny is shifting into 3rd then 4th, instead of shifting to 2nd then 3rd. but im probably wrong. One more thing... for the tranny to down shift i almost have to floor it, (is that normal?) and when it does down shift it Revs up before actually catching the gear. slipping?

Please help me out guys. what do you think is the problem? am i not suppose to feel my aod tranny shift 3 gears? and what is causing the slipping? what should i do?? AHHHH.. thanks for all your guys help.!!!

sounds like the TV cable needs adjustment. i'd recommend taking it to a local trans shop to have the cable adjutsed because if done improperly it can burn up the trans in short order.

What gears do you have in the rear? I have 3.00 gears and the only way to get it to shift to 4th gear is having the car moving a minimum of 50 mph. At 55 mph, my tach reads about 1250 rpms.

Maybe its not shifting to forth because of your speed/rpms. Just an idea.

it depends on the shop doing it, obviously this is a non stock application so every shop will vary on it. i can tell you that they will need to hook up a pressure gauge to do it right because the TV cable controls the line pressure in the trans. if the TV cable adjustment is off enough it can cause all of the symptoms you describe

my gears in the rear are basically stock. which is i believe 2.75s??(planning to swap to 3.55s)yeah the last shift i feel is roughly around 42MPH then around 55MPH my tach reads roughly 2400rpms. And when im going about 65MPH my tach is around 3100RPMs i believe.. so yeah im still clueless.... =(

are you positive it is an aod, those rpm numbers sound high for ovedrive and stock gears (2.??).

Agreed. At 65mph they should be about 1800 especially with 2.75. If its from a donor, did you see it run prior ro purchase to see if it worked correctly? maybe that's why it was removed from the old car.

I had my C4 rebuilt (when I had the C4 in) and it cost $850 to give you an idea.

I'm sure most guys posting know what you were talking about anyway.

Yes and yes

here is some info from this site:

http://www.mustangsandmore.com/ubb/DanJonesC4AODswap.html

Throttle Valve Operation
------------------------
The AOD does not use engine vacuum and a modulator valve to sense load.
Instead, a throttle valve is used which moves proportional to throttle pedal
travel. Unlike a kick-down rod, the TV linkage has to operate throughout
the full travel. This is one of the most important parts of the swap to get
right. Failure to do so will cause poor shift quality and can ruin the
transmission. When adjusting the linkage, it is safer to err on the side of
hard shifts. There are a several ways of implementing the TV linkage and
the linkages can be pirated from cars or trucks that came with AOD's and carbs or throttle body injection. A rod arrangement was used on AOD cars equipped with carbs and TBI while a cable was used on SEFI cars. We were planning on getting the linkage off a variable venturi (VV) carb from a local junkyard that had a stack of them, but they had recently tossed them all out. We ended up just adapting the kick down rod to serve as the TV linkage. The trick is to ensure the proper range of travel of the transmission TV lever for the entire carburetor throttle range. We used another AOD equipped car to look at to get the proper lever orientation and ratios. After we were finished with the swap, I noticed a friend's 1981 AOD equipped pickup truck has a rod linkage with an adjustable lever at the transmission and a threaded arrangement at carb that looks like it might work nicely as a swap linkage.
Remember, you'll need a way to adjust the linkage to vary shift feel.
Alternatively, you can purchase an aftermarket TV cable kits (available from
Windsor-Fox (http://www.windsor-fox.com), Total Performance, and others).
For more information on alternatives, find a copy of the May 1990 issue of
Super Ford magazine. The article "A-OK AOD" contains a sidebar on adapting
the AOD to non-stock applications. Ignore the part about your stock
flexplate and block plate working just fine and pay close attention to the linkage descriptions.

Ignore the part about Windsor-Fox. They are in a state of transformation I believe.

There is a lot of information in this forum and on the internet about aod swaps and if you do a search, you'll probably come up with something about checking the pressure and the amount of slack in the cable at idle....

Here are two threads with some adjustment info:

http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=565285&highlight=cable+adjustment

http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=431616&highlight=cable+adjustment

As it suggests in a couple places, you could bring it to a transmission shop...

Do your shifter indicators line up with all the gears?

i.e -
when you are in park...in indicator reads park exactly
when you are in reverse it reads reverse exactly
when you are in neutral it reads neutral exactly
when you are in D it reads drvie exactly
when you are in 2 it reads 2 exactly
when you are in 1 in reads 1 exactly

When driving the car, if you put the shifter all the way back into 1, it should hold 1st gear until you manually shift it up to the 2 position.

When driving the car, if you put the shifter in the 2 position, it will dirve normally using 1, 2 and 3 gears, but never shift into overdrive

When driving the car, if you put in into D it will use all 4 gears.

I would look at 2 things.

1. Confirm that your shifter indents are aligning to the gear selections in the tranny. If you shifter is mal-adjusted you may think you are in D but actually running it in 2.

2. 2.79 gears and an AOD....that's like wearing a belt and suspenders. When you are on the highway, driving 65 turning about 2500 RPM (which would be 3rd gear)....speed up....see if when you hit 3k or so it shifts into OD, perhaps someone installed a shift kit and it will only upshift when you reach a certain RPM/line pressure. Also, knock the shift back to 2, does it downshift? If it does, then you were in OD and you might have an excessive slippage problem. Do you know what converter is in the tranns?

Here is a quick and dirty chart to reference roughly what RPMs you expect for speeds in each gear of your AOD with a 2.79 rear gear.

They usually hit that 'aerodynamic's of a brick' wall long before the theoritical top speed based on gearing (and a small factor for converter slip) is reached.
