Okay, I'm putting in an AOD in place of my C4 when I put my motor and tranny in. Since the shifter lever on the AOD is on the bottom, and the C4 is on the top, I'm curious of the shift pattern. What is the AOD in when the lever is in the forward position? Park or 1st? Thanks guys!
It should be in park, just like any other automatic. Your stock shifter will have to be modified or you can get an adapter to match the AOD to your stock shifter.
BTW, do you know if your AOD came out of a column shift car or a console shift car? If it came from a column shift car (like an LTD or Grand Marquis), it may be necessary to flip the shift linkage on the AOD for it to work with your stock shifter correctly.
Gate spacing and shift pattern are the same. AOD = P-R-N-3/OD-D-1 & C4 = P-R-N-3-2-1.
Flip the shift lever on the AOD by removing the retaining bolt and turning the lever 180 degrees and then reinstall the retaining bolt. You should be ready to go.
Once you have it installed, I can answer the next question for you....how to shift it.
If you are doing a fast start and want to hold a gear, you start it in the 1 spot (this puts the tranny in first)
Hammer the gas, watch the tach go up, when you get to your shift point, upshift to the 2nd spot and then IMMEDIATELY pull it back into the 1 spot. This will put the tranny into 2nd and allow you to hold that gear until your next shift point.
When that point comes simple click it back up into the 2nd spot and it will run out 3rd for you without shifting into OD (which you don't want to do).
Once you have it installed, I can answer the next question for you....how to shift it.

If you shift like this, start saving now for the inevitable tranny rebuild. You will burn out the bands. But it does work. You did also get the throttle valve cable right? You need that too.
As was mentioned before turn the shift lever 180 degrees and it will work like it did on my 69 going from a FMX to AOD. The only thing I had to do is make a change to the shift lever gromet on the end and it bolted right up to my floor shifter. The other thing to remember is that if you rotate that arm I am sure you will need to drop the pan and loosen that shift armfrom the inside like I had to do.
Sounds like you might be talking about a reverse shift pattern valve body. Valve bodies can only be installe done way and work.
A reverse shift pattern valve body referse to the shift pattern. (kind of a redundent statement I know). You can't get a reverse valve body AOD, but in the C4 and C6 you can. Basically it works like this, you remove the factory valvebody and trash it. You put in the aftermarket valve body and there you go.
C4 & C6 are.... P-R-N-3-2-1
Reverse makes it.... P-R-N-1-2-3 and esentially makes it a clutchless manual tranny with a torque converter.
