I recently bought a used AOD from a wrecker he claims someone bought it from him and returned it because it won't shift out of first, Is this a common AOD thing or did the previous guy just not hook up the TV cable proper thanks for any help you can give me

Oh god yeah that's way too common. AOD's are definetly my least favorite tranny of all time.

I'm terrified of the swap I just feel like I am about to embark on a whole pile of headache but I need the gas mileage

I use it as a loaner vehicle and I like shifting but some can't, won't or other

well after much debate with a ford friend here in town the C6 and the AOD will be on the market in favour of a 5 speed as he has all the stuff for the swap with the 3.00 gear set I have in the rear it should pull some good mileage and be reasonably sturdy

A C6? For an around town runabout,sounds like a dead reliable way to go. A minor build on it and those things'll take like 500hp.

The C6 is all rebuilt by Wholsale here in town and works great but I would really like to take advantage of the engine torque on the highway

If the AOD is stuck in first, most likely the forward clutch is welded up...does it go forward in neutral? there was some checks you could do to see, I can't remember what they were, but mine was new, and stuck in forwards...

The problem I had when my AOD's were not coming out of first was the valve body was getting contaminents... And the reason it would'nt shift ouf of OD was the governer had the same problem. this was using all new parts (converter included) and after having the housing and valve bodies cleaned. lasted 1 week. had identical problems to my old AOD which I did not use any parts from. Out it came and in went the 5 speed. If you are stuck on the AOD idea use some of the updates from the AOD-E. That is a much better tranny.

I have rebuilt numerous Mopar automatics but am unfamiliar with the fomoco ones what hardware from the E version will cross over ?
