AOD won't hold 1st

I never really try much, since I drive pretty calmly, but tonight I tried to put the car and first and hold it there, but the shifter was very hard to pull down to the 1, and it wouldn't "click" into place (but that's always been issue w/ my car, but never felt pressure resisiting). In the past, the car could hold 1 if I ket it there. Even when I could get it to click, and started to drive normally, it would just shift into D when it normally would if it were in the D position. If I was doing arounf 25-30 mph and pulled the shifter all the way down, it used to downshift, now it won't at all.
Fluid is fine, I played w/ the TV, but that's not the problem.
Does this sound like a linkage adj. problem?
The "pressure" i feel trying to pull it into first makes me think it's internal
Anyone?
If I had never tried to use first, I wouldn't know. It drives fine otherwise.

checkin' it in a few; I'll post back w/ results...

so I went and adjusted it (took alot or trial and error and trying to make sense of th manuals directions) and ultimately it ended up right back where it started. Either way, now it'll hold first again, but still won't click into first, but will hold it.
Weird.
Either way, now I have to go subscribe to someone else's thread about the car dying when you shft into D, cuz after I did all that mine almost died shifting into D. Crap.
