Just had my aode rebuilt last week. One of the problems I was having was when I started the car it would lock itself in park, so I would have to shut it off, than put it in neutral, and start it again.

So they replaced was the neutral switch, which I thought had solved the problem until the tranny locked itself in park again a couple nights ago.

Talked to them today and they mentioned it might be the brake switch, and that pumping the brakes or pushing the pedal down harder might help - and if it does than the problem is the brake switch.

Can anybody offer some advice - what else could it be?

Thanks.

So if you put it in N and the engine off it wont roll? If thats the case then it's the it's the internal parking lever. And if your having problems like this with a fresh rebuild then you need to take it back to the place and make them fix it right.

My Grand Prix was doing something kinda like that for a while, i had to push the shift lock release to get out of park. I had a bad wiring harness under the dash that wasnt sending a signal to the "shift lock" release.

Check to see if your brake lights work. If not, it is wiring that goes into the brake switch. If the wire comes out of the bracket, you will have to push really hard to get the car out of park. In addition, your brake lights will not work.

Just something to check...
