Just bought a AODE a guy had in his car for a month to swap my busted pos out of my car with. I've got a few questions.....first off...how much tranny fluid should I put in the torque convertor and the transmission once I get it swapped in? The other thing I'm wondering.....can I take my torque convertor somewhere to get tested? I've got a higher stall in it now, but I don't know if that's possibly part of the problem in the first place. The guy gave me the stock convertor with the tranny. Should I just put that in? Or get my higher stall checked and use it? Trannys are definately my kryptonite. Thanks!

Usually the convertors take anywhere from a half quart to a full quart. You've got too much in there when it comes out. :)

The trannies take 10-14 quarts depending on how well you bled the system, how much was in the convertor when you put it in, if you have a cooler inline (very recommended) etc. I have a B&M stacked plate cooler in-line after the stock radiator heat transfer part.

Once you get everything installed, put the rear wheels in the air and run the car manually through the gears a few times, keep checking fluid and adding as necessary to get the proper fill. Don't overfill!

Usually you can send convertors in to the manufacturer to be checked out/restalled. Get with a tranny shop or convertor shop to make the decisions there - they can also verify what I told you above as well. :nice:

Ok.....I got my old transmission out, and 64 is stamped great big at the top of the bellhousing on mine.....and 35 is stamped great big on the new one that I got....plus it looks like there's more bolt holes on the bellhousing on my old one too, did I get a bunk transmission from a different car or something??

I'd check real quick to see what's stamped on 4R70W trannies from GT's. The N.E. Mod-motor subforum should have something listed or a quick answer...............

Good luck.

UGH, I'm pretty sure it's a 4.6 transmission. There's 3 bolt holes for the starter to hook up to and they're smaller than my 5.0 starter holes :bang: Ok.....back to the other question I had....does anyone know if I can start up my car with no transmission in it?

Ok....signed up for the ford transmission forum and a guy said that the tranny I bought was for a crown vic.....great! 4.6 and all. Anyone want a recently rebuilt 4.6 crown vic transmission????

Ok, well I called the guy up and he was totally cool and gave me my money back so I found another tranny that actually fits and got it up and in this weekend. Got everything bolted back in filled the torque converter which took almost 2 qts of fluid and started to fill the tranny up....I got a little over 9 qts in and I hear fluid hitting the ground.....great! I look up under the car and it's coming from the top of the tailshaft somewhere.....did I put too much fluid in? Help please! I just want my car to run again

Possibly coming out of the speedometer sensor spot? Is the vehicle speed sensor plugged in correctly? Sounds like you may have too much in it.

Here's how I did mine - filled it up w/ about 8qts then put the back wheels in the air - ran it through the gears and added as necessary. I ended up with about 12quarts including having a large tranny cooler in the mix.

No, it was coming out of the very top of the tailshaft housing....that's where the overflow tube is...that's the little thing that moves a little bit on the top of the tranny, right? Well, I drained some fluid out either way so I could run the engine and start checking levels.......yeah, my car is running like complete ass so I get out and I'm looking to make sure I plugged everything in, it's all good, car is barely staying running......get back in my car, my fuel pressure is just under 40, battery charge is good........and........no oil pressure!!! crap!!! I shut it off, but it'd been running for a few minutes :bang: So I pulled my distributor out and my pump shaft is wobbling around a bunch, so I think I murdered it and my pump at the same time my tranny took a nose dive on me! So now on to more problems......any way I can get that pump and shaft out without taking my engine out? I was thinking about unbolting the motor mounts and tranny and just tilting it out some, I'm trying to not lose hope.

There is a keeper that keeps the oil pump driveshaft from popping through the block out of the oil pump - you'll have to remove the pan and oil pump to swap it out.

Was the driveshaft stuck in the distributor when you pulled it out? Did your oil pump lock up and twist it? Doesn't sound too good dawg.

You may be able to hook up a drill and a special adapter to the driveshaft to see if you still have oil pressure when it spins.
