AODE Tranny

I recently purchased a 98 GT with 98k miles on it. It has an AODE transmission. I didn't want an automatic but most 5spd's that I came across were ragged out. This car is in better than average condition. The only thing I dislike about it is the way the AODE shifts. When I first got it, I thought the tranny was going. I took it to a transmission shop and they said it was perfect. I hate the way it shifts. When it downshifts to 1st gear it has an obvious bump which is annoying to me. When you accelerate hard it also seems like the transmission can't catch up with the power of the engine, if that makes any sense. I know electronic tranny's do act different but I really dislike this one. I had a 98 Chrysler Cirrus and it shifted the same way. Any other other AODE stangs out there that has the same issue?

it's normal, best thing you can do is get a Tuner and optimize the shfit points and purchase a trans cooler. If you want to do better you can do the J-Mod and add a better stall converter

Do the Jerry mod to improve the shift firmness and get a tranny cooler to extend the life of the tranny. If you don't want to do the Jerry mod, get a valve body from Performance Automatics. Do not get a shift kit.

One pretty easy thing you can do to make it feel a little better, is to drain all of the fluid, and use Mercon V. If you've got the time, while the pan is down, pull the snapring that holds the 1-2 shift accumulator piston in, and check to see if that piston is crooked in the piston bore (VERY common), and see if the spring has been shatterred. Every single AODE I have worked on, has had the piston stuck crooked in the bore, and the spring was in 3 pieces. I reccomend getting the updated accumulator piston, which won't get stuck in the bore.

Do all of that, with a J-mod, and you will enjoy that auto quite a bit more. Then, save up for a good stall converter. Good luck!

You have a 4R70W btw, but all the suggestions are good starting ideas.

What will the performance transmission valve bodies do to help performance?

I think I am going to drain my fluid soon, install a cooler, and switch to mercon V.
