Are 4.10 worth the extra $400 than the 3.73 on an aode????

The question might be kinnda weird but if I install the 4.10s, I will need a JMS custom chip which is just about $400. I have also heard that if I do the 3.73s, I won't have to mess with anything. Is the gain from 4.10s of that from 3.73s really that much to where I shouldn't mind paying the extra cash for the chip??

Is that the average price ($400) for a custom chip in order to make the 4.10's work properly on an AODE? I was planning on going with 4.10's but it is very tempting to use that money for something else.

Depends on what you are doing with the car. I went with 3.73s and wouldn't go to 4.10s for anything. My car hooks good now, and that $400 difference is better spent else where.... like a stall converter as 95snoozer said.

I'm at the top of 3rd gear in the 1/4 on the juice now.

So in other words we need more info. What do you plan to do to your car, and where do you want to be with it????

Does anyone know for sure the SpeedCal will fix the computer.... I thought it just changed the speed signal???

I've had 4.10s for over a year and I've done nothing at all to the computer. It seems that some people have issues and some don't. Besides, I don't think you can get a good converter for $400.

well i put a 4.10 in my auto about 2 years back and i was so happy. there was a difference of 1mph for every 10mph you go compared to the 3.73 with is just about dead on i think. now that i went with a 5spd with my 4.10 still out back, i almost wish i had a 3.73 cause i top out 4th gear right around 104mph so if i plan on any more good mods i might have to get a lower ratio gear to cross in 4th still.

i didnt mind the mph off at all tho and for an auto, i thought the 4.10 was awesome. just gotta be careful not to tap the rev limiter too much but im guessing you will have the same problem with the 3.73

I have 3.73's and the speedo is not even close at high speeds. Around town its usually only off by 3-5 mph. But across the traps I was about 15mph off. it was reading 110 and my slip said 96. And that's with the shop telling me they changed the speedo gear. Either way though I am glad I have 3.73 they make a great street gear and I am no where near the rev limiter in 3rd in the 1/4......YET!!

ok my plans are to make this car a fast daily driver. the PI converter(3200) is $753 and a little out of my budget right now. i have these parts at home, i just need to install them
1. cobra intake(installed)
2. 4.10s
3. mac l/t, prochamber, flowpath
4. adjustable FPR
5. 190lph
6. aluminum pulleys
7. densecharger
8. shift kit(installed)
9. msd 6al and ignition kit
10. suspension upgrade including control arms

i'm planning on a 347 stroker with trickflow cam, intake, and heads, but that won't be till later later. i'd say several years.

and what i meant about the $400 chip is not to correct my speedometer, it's so i won't have any problems with my shifting. i have seen several posts on here that say that they lose time at the track with 4.10s due to them hitting the rev limiter a lot. i don't want the 4.10 to mess up all of my shift points on the tranny, that's my main concern.

I have the 4:10's in my AODE vert and sometimes I wonder if I should have done 4:30's or higher. Before I did the swap I had 3:27's and figured the 3:73's wern't that much of a step up. If you have a 5-speed then 3:55's or 3:73's are great but the AODE needs a lot of gear to get it up and moving. I currently have a B&M 3000 stall and I would highly recomend going with a good stall converter such as the PI because the performance difference justifies the extra cash.

AODE's are picky.... the difference between 3.73 and 4.10s isn't worth pissing off the computer to me. Even it were free, I personally wouldn't make the change. There aren't enough guys on here posting that they went to 4.10s without problems for me to do it.

Feel free to though.... hopefully you can add to the list of successes! :D

Please note I also drive the hell out of my car. 165k miles on it and I now have to drive 35 miles one way to work.

that's the same reason why i ordered the 4.10s but then, i was told i needed a custom chip so the shifting wouldn't be all over the place. i thought i had done my homework before i bought the gears. i was told that all i needed for them to work properly was a shift kit which i already had so didn't think i was gonna need something else. i'd much rather spend the $400 towards that PI stall. i really wouldn't consider getting anything else than a 3200 stall PI. $753 is the cheapest i've seen them on the net. i know what you mean, i spoke to speedconcepts and they told me they would take them back but i would have to pay shipping to and from them which is close to $60. better than $400 for the chip. i don't know what i'm gonna do, should i risk it. my appointment is at 2pm today for the install and it's $80 for the install. should i and see what happens? :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang:
