Are auto and std speedo and throttle cables the same?

In the V8 cars, yes. Not sure about 4-cylinder ones.

All cars with cruse control and all cars made after 1988 use one type of cable

All cars without cruse control made in 1988 and earlier use another type of cable.

The VSS equipped cars have a speedo cable with a different fitting on the transmission end of the cable. It is the fitting on the LH side of the following picture.
