I have the opportunity to buy some stock Ford 4.10 gears. They are new, never used. Lots of posts say go with Ford Racing to avoid gear noise. What about stock 4.10s?
I agree. The newer Ford gears are made by Motive and they suck in my opinion. I've had them replaced 4 times (6 total repairs) and it still whines. Spend the extra money and get the original Ford built gears and save yourself money and time in the long run!
There is no box. The gears are pulled from a new OEM rear end, but never used. Its a long story, but they wouldn't likely be Motive in this case right?
The only OEM 4.10's in an 8.8" ring & pinion should be the Ranger 4x4's nowadays. If that's the case, then they should be Ford gears.
Oh, and I have the Ford Racing 4.10's and they don't make any noise at all. The 4.30's in my 2003 Mach 1 didn't make any noise either, and lots of people assumed they would. A good tech who takes his time to shim and set up the rear end properly can do wonders in that respect. I work at a Ford dealership and our diff guy has been here many years. Find the right tech and you'll be happy.
