ATF?

A friend of mine told me that if you put a small amount of ATF in your oil about 200 miles before the next scheduled change, all the extra gunk will loosen up and come out with the oil. If this is true then here are my questions: what does ATF stand for(that's a stupid one, huh?)? Where can I get it? Will it hurt my enginge? How much should I put in? Thanks for the info in advance.

ATF stands for Automatic Transmission Fluid. i've never heard putting it in your crankcase though.

yeah Ive heard of that before,

to be honest Id say not to do it,

ALL quality oil that meets US specification has a detergent in it

They all clean your engine of you change it frequently enough,

Additives are not worth it in my opinion

OK, it kinda sounds like too big of a chance for me anyway. If I messed something up doing that, I would be really pissed off. Thanks guys.

That's not really the way to do a proper engine flush anyway, and I doubt it would help, or harm the engine.

The old school way (and I still think the best way) is to add 4 parts ATF and 1 part clean Varosol to the engine. Bring it up to operating temperature, take it out for a little run even, then drain it and add some fresh oil.

That's the way Mechanics have been doing it for years, long before the expensive over the counter engine flush additives came out, and there have never been any negative consequences.

Not to mention it's a hellofalot cheaper than the alternative.

If you want a engine flush by a quart of engine fush.It is made for that.I have heard of people puttin kerosine in the crankcase to.Thing is some older engines the gunk is holdin the valve train together.You might end up with a loose noisey engine and mess up the seals.

I have also heard what sublime29 just said that with older pushrod engines that the gunk buildup in the valvetrain is actually alright. I have heard that you dont want to clean that crap out unless your changing valves, valvesprings, rocker arms, or pushrods. Why do u think u need to flush out your engine?

I would be afraid it would either cause the old gaskets to leak, or some of the gunk might come loose and clog the oil pump.
