At recent all mustang and ford carshow i was talking with a local rep for ATI about a P1SC for a carbuerted 302 and while he didn't have any carbuerated ford info on hand he did give me a bunch of info on chevys? and directed me to the ATI website where i discovered a kit for a carbuerated ford. yay! however i have to wait for the catalog in the mail since only the chevy one was online? what is with these people. anyway the setup looks really good and unlike the paxton and vortech kits the ATI uses a carb bonnet instead of the enclosure so you can actually see the carb which is nice if you have a nice looking carb like a demon. best part is i should fit under the hood and add about 40% HP. is anybody on stangent running this on their carbuerated ford? i'll post more info on this setup if i can. for those that aren't familiar with ATI the P1sc is a self contained blower which does not rely on engine oil and is more efficient than its engine oil competitors. this is another reason why i like this setup and can't wait to get more info. i might be the first one to have it in a 65 stang. sweet
 
i don't think so. The enclosure style is used primarily in marine applications where it is required by coast gaurd regulations. the bonnet has been used for decades in automotive racing applications and with ATI setups making over 1400hp on pump gas i do believe it is quite capable of significant performance. especially more than that of a small novi1200.
 
Yes. I am running a blow through ATI Procharger on a 1968 fastback.
I used the low profile ATI bonnet at first, then the taller ATI marine bonnet, and finally settled on the CSU bonnet. The horsepower increases with each bonnet change were pretty dramatic.
I also feel that the bonnet is more performance oriented that the carb enclosure. I don't think the self contained units are more efficient than the other models that are lubricated by engine oil, but it's primarily due to the helical cut impeller, rather than the straight cut impeller(P1SC has a helical cut), and what your driving habits are. The helical cut impellers come on like gangbusters once then start moving large amounts of air.

At low boost pressure (5 maybe 8 psi) the bonnet works just fine, but if you try to put 10, 15 or more psi into the carb it'll start blowing out seals and stuff becasue the atmospheric pressure inside the carb will be higher (it's under pressure from the supercharger) than outside the carb. Floats won't work right. Jetting will be all out of whack. It won't run quite right.

But when you place a box on top of the intake and put the entire carb inside the box and then pressuize the box, you have equal pressure all around the carb and it can function correctly. You'll make more power and be able to run more boost.

The box is better.
 
Well, Prochargers own project Nova is running 2 bonnets on top of the carbs quite well on a BBC (have you checked the site to see what its running?!?). I think they'd know what works and what doesn't. Jim Summers is the driver for the car and had quite an illustrious career as a Pro 5.0 driver. Far as I know, changing the floats out is what you need to do, besides, this is a P1SC, not a D4 chain drive blower, I doubt he'll be putting much more than 10 psi to it anyway. Heck, he could put 5 to it and tell people its 10 and 99% of them won't know the difference.

Ummmm.... Hate to bust your bubble but I'm making over 850rwhp with over 15lbs of boost through a extreme velocity bonnet and have ABSOLUTELY none of the issues you have talked about. :shrug: Too many people go by hearsay on this subject and not real world experience. My car was easy to tune, doesnt blow any seals etc. The carb box is a big unwiedly overpriced myth. Go with a bonnet from CSU or EXTREME VELOCITY and dont look back.... :D

I'm no expert. I am only relaying information I read in an older issue of Super Ford mgazine (I think it was Super Ford) where this very topic was discussed.

There are many ways to arrive at the same end result. But I'd still run the box encloseure.

EDIT: Plus I like the look of the box. :D

I hate to jack this thread, but I'm looking at supercharging my mach 1 in the next year or so. Here is the deal, I don't want to lose the shaker so I was thinking that removing the snorkel from the air cleaner and running the boost pipe through it to a carb bonnet inside of the air cleaner. Even though the shaker would no longer be functional, it'd still dance like it was made to do. What are yall's opinions on this?
 
wow this is great info. mrfomoco that sounds like it would be totally trick. one of the reasons i liked the bonnet is becasue i don't want to cover up the awesome looking mighty demon carb that i plan to get for it. i do only plan on running 6 to 8 psi of boost so i think it will work nice! now i'm psyched. slapper do you have any pics of your setup. i think i will have to put it on the drivers side. thanks again
 
the only way to get it is to click on the request catalog button and have them mail it to you. i just got the book in the maill today. i called and talked to the tech dept. there and they said it is basically a 86 to 93 5.0L kit but with the carb bonnet. also i have to upgrade my fuel pump from my holley blue (electric)to a rediculously huge electric pump with a special bypass regulator. which means i will need a return line to the tank. also they suggest the intercooler for engines making over 275hp , too bad i can't fit it anywhere. .
 
where can i get the CSU or extreme velocity bonnets? slapper did you use an elctric pump? i'm not sure how powerful a pump i need to get. i was looking at an 18psi aeromotive. i think the 35psi aeromotive would be overkill and it would just be pumping th fuel around in circles?

the holly blue is plenty for the 5-8 lbs of boost you want. You will need a regulator that has a bypass as well as a boost balance port. Carb box is hard to tune the carb. Forget about looks. If you are putting a supercharger on your car for looks you are wasting your time. "well, not only for looks, I want a little extra power too...sniff sniff". Do your research. Self contained or not, there's no big deal. Tell you what, my self contained Paxton is dead because it's self contained. I'm on the second Paxton and very close to my first Vortech engine oiled. I am swapping to a carb bonnet. For those of you who never owned a supercharger shut up. You thing the box is better you're dead wrong. Atmospheric pressures, bull. You run the boost balancer off the regulator and that evens the pressures in the float bowls. The floats, wheater you go box or bonnet are phenolic so won't crush under pressure. The bonnet allows access to the carb for tuning while at idle. The box, negative. Get your crap straight before you try giving people info you have no experience with. People like you should ride the bus.

No I'm not running an electric pump. Mostly because I get tierd of hearing the darn thing running. You want VOLUME, not so much pressure. The boost reference will keep the pressure up as needed. At 6 lbs of boost, the carter strip pump was keeping up--barely. Then I went to 10 lbs boost and am now running the Holley Volumemax with an AN8 supply line from the tank outlet,(1/2")and an AN6 fuel feed from the regulator. Plenty of fuel through all the RPM range as verified on the wide O2 sensor during pulls on the dyno. I'm also using a deadhead regulator-Product Engineering-referenced to boost from the bonnet. The top of the Volumemax pump diaphram is also referenced to boost from the bonnet. It would be a better delivery system if I plumbed a return regulator back to the tank, as sudden throttle openings would not result in any possible fluctuations in fuel delivery pressure or flow. It's the better way to go, and I will eventually do it now that I have a sump on the fuel tank, but so far it has worked very well for a couple years. In fact I just saw a new Holley fuel line in Fastest Street Car magazine recently that had a return outlet port at the end of the secondary inlet port(a TEE where it attaches to the secondary float bowl), and I think that's what I'll use as fuel fluctuations will theoretically be downstream from the float bowl inlets. The return line should be at least as big in diameter as the supply line really.
 
Oh yeah,.....the fuel atomization through the induction system acts to cool some of the incoming air charge which has been elevated from the blower compressor. No, I'm not running an intercooler at 10lbs, but if I did, it would be more efficient, even with a few pounds or so loss through the intercooler and ducting.
 
the paxton self contained used sealed bearings which were prone to failure. the ATI self contained uses a synthtic oil blend which needs to be changed every 6000miles. i don't mind the engine oil varieties but if i don't have to plumb oil lines so much the better.

i am having a hard time locating the correct boost referenced pressure regulator. currently i have -6an line as my supply from the tank. with the holley blue pump it does not require a return line for NA. because it has an internal check valve. do you think i'll need a return line if i can locate the correct regulator? i figure the pump will just free spin until the boost kicks in and requires more fuel.
