Purpose of front spoiler

I seem to remember that the purpose of the front spoiler, besides being musclecar jewelry,
, was not to push down on the front of the car itself so much as to redirect air around the side of the car. The idea being to keep air from getting under the car in the first place and pushing up on the car fron underneath.

One of the guys who raced 302s mentions it as being "flimpsy" says "To keep them from folding under, we attached cables at the ends and several places along the middle". To the front bumper?? Don't know how this could possibly look good.
If it's all fiberglass, and you don't mind butchering your front valance, I would agree with latamud - do some self tapping screws to reinforce it. drill first, then screw to avoid splitting it, but you knew that.
I was planning on going with the Maier full fiberglass unit with the spoiler molded in whenever I get around to doing mine.
