It depends on how they bait them. The way Dateline conducts their investigations is in line with how most Law Enforcement Agencies do it.

Entrapment only counts if the person does something they wouldn't normally do, because the Officer/Investigator encouraged them to do it.

If an Officer is undercover and tells you to smoke weed, that's entrapment. If you just smoke weed around an undercover officer, that's not entrapment.

Dateline doesn't go into chat rooms telling people they're a horny 14 yr-old girl looking for penis. They simply act as a normal innocent kid would and wait for predators to bite. That is completely legal.

Here is something that shocks me about our country. 100 years ago it was VERY looked down upon to be gay. No one talked about it or "came out of the closet", however, having sex with or marrying someone many years younger than yourself was commonplace. Many times a male in his early to mid 20s would marry a girl as young as 12 or 13 and this was viewed as normal. Today being gay is still not widely accepted, but it is nowhere near as taboo as having relations with someone underage. Personally I think both are perversions, but our society definitely dictates what is accepted and what is not. Today if you call someone a *** or queer you are the one that is ridiculed. Maybe in 100 years calling someone a pedophile will be viewed in much the same way......

You guys that think "that should not be legal" should be thankful. who cares how they catch them. They are no longer a threat for now. if you had a child, would you let them hang out with those kind of people?

The difference is being gay is between two consenting adults. Pedophilia involves children too young to make good decisons about these issues. yes, things have changed, but there's probably a reason for that.

As far as legality, the rules do need to be followed. I know its nice to say we need to get pedophiles off our streets any way possible, but if we break the rules doing it, the fabric of our legal system begins to unravel, and that's a direction we don't want to go in. But thusfar, it appears that Dateline and the way they're catching pedophiles is legit. Good on 'em.

I'm glad that Dateline catches these people, and I think that the way they go about it is perfectly legal and appropriate... but I think that the way the police handle them afterwards is ridiculous. Many times the guys surrender peacefully and the cops practically beat the crap out of them while handcuffing them. I'm a big fan of the right to a fair trial, so until they are found guilty in a court of law (and they will be found guilty) they should not be treated like that.

After they are, of course, they'll get what they truly deserve in prison. (Oops! Where did those stairs come from?)

This is where I see the problem in the decisions our society has made.

By your thinking, it is socially acceptable to want to have sex with 10 yr-old boys and girls, as long as the act is not carried out.

Personally, I think you would have to have serious mental problems to want such a thing...and yes I think mental problems applies to the other group as well.

No, I do not think its ok for people to have sex with 10 year olds...maybe you could explain how what I said derived into that. I also do not think homosexuality is right. God gave us dicks and women vags for a specific reason. Its a sin, but sin is sin, nomatter what form it takes and we shouldn't outcast them for it. Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone. They aren't hurting anybody but themselves.

Pedophiles, on the other hand, hurt innocent children. Comparing a sick kiddie lover to somebody who is gay I think crosses the line. But then I guess that's just where our opinions diverge.

I'm not saying we should outcast them. But I don't think encouraging their behavior is acceptable either.

Our society has made homosexuality socially acceptable. There is a fine line between not ridiculing someone and encouraging their behavior.
If we treated pedophiles the same way we treat homosexuals, we would tell them there's nothing wrong with fantasizing about a little boy or girl because that's how they were born. Then of course, we would have to have some reality show about pedophilia being okay on MTV or Rosie or whatever.

We don't have to encourage homosexuality, but does that mean we deny them the rights that the rest of us enjoy? Do we treat them differently and discrimante against them? What are you saying we do differently so we stop encouraging homsexuality? Put them in re-orientation camps? lol

I think that where you are off base is by comparing being gay to being a pedophile. Pedophilia preys on children while homosexuality is pretty harmless (IMHO). If being gay is indeed a mental problem just like pedophilia is, then at least its not hurting people.

Today's 13 year old's have tits. That messes me right up....

That said, the thought of doing one is morally wrong, that's just a social norm that we've carried on for a long time.

Now be honest here....how many times have you been driving down the street, look at a ridiculously hot chick, then realize that she's twelve-teen? Uh huh....you all know it's happened...

What separates the men from the pedophiles is that we'll say "ah ****" and they'll say "ah opportunity"

I think what these dateline folks are doing is priceless! It's not like they're going to nail innocent guys doing this....everyone they catch has been guilty right from the start

this is just my humble opinion, but generally I think that these guys are getting what they deserve, and I hope they spend lots of days in front of some horny lifer in prison...

We could start off by accepting the fact that it's not normal. We know this, but we won't say so. Why? We don't want to hurt anyone's feelings?
You don't seem to get that by giving them the rights of hetero couples, we are in fact encouraging their behavior. I mean, how are they supposed to know what they're doing is not normal if we keep telling them it's okay?

I don't think we should force therapy or re-orientation. But if we could at least make them aware that they are not normal...
I don't think all of them will seek help, but at least some. As it stands now though, nothing is broke, so why fix it?

That's where I disagree with most organized religions. Who am I to tell people how to live? I know that I personally do not agree that homosexuality is right, but I don't force my views and opinions on how to live onto other people. As far as I'm concerned, if it doesn't hurt others then I'm fine with it. For that matter I don't think it hurts them anymore than any kind of sin hurts us.

Edit: since when did this become a discussion on homosexuality? lol

Who's to say? I can answer that one. Against "popular" culture today that basically says "if it doesnt hurt anybody then it is ok." The new testament tells us what is right and wrong and even considering doing ..well I cat even type it.. is wrong.

In one of the chapters Jesus also tells us not to believe in any other people that tell you they are "him" meaning the messiah and/or false doctines that tell you that he is not who he says he is (i.e. islam - the big lie - considers him a prophet). I am certain that Jesus wanted us to use some common sense as well.

If there is any question that the new testament is not accurate (on of the other stupid rumors accelerating) that is false. From the original writings it is proven within 99.5% accuracy to this day and what isn't accurate is some grammer and punctuation. The reason I can speak with confidence as to what is right and wrong is because I have done my research scientifically, logically and spiritually. I usually dont discuss these topics cause I dont want to be looked at as a thumper cause I cant stand that. But ince y'all brought it up...

If the "if it doesn't hurt anybody then its ok" doctrine is wrong, then what will we base our laws on? Should we become a theocracy? Should we jail people for using God's name in vain? I'm pretty sure that America is based on religous freedom. Now don't get me mixed up with those people who want to take "God" out of the pledge of allegience and ban prayer in school, sporting events, and such, because this country was founded on the belief in God. But how you choose to worship should be left up to the individual. Hell, the entire Anglican church was founded because some English king wanted to have a divorce...

I really don't want to get caught up in a religious arguement here, but suffice it to say that I guess my religious views differ from yours.

I think it will hurt us in the long run.

As I have been trying to point out, it is only a matter of time before Pedophiles use the same arguments Homosexuals have used. If we as a society encourage homosexuality, what ground do we have to stand on in saying that wanting to have sex with children is wrong? Surely you believe that even if someone doesn't have sex with a child, their interest in it is not acceptable, even though the act of fantasizing is not hurting anyone.
