My GT came with the stock 4 speaker setup and I have been shopping around for a new head unit, front speakers/tweeters, rear package shelf speakers and subs/amp. I am too lazy to install them myself since it has been a good number of years since I have installed audio components (probably around 10 years or so). Are there any places I should avoid? Chain stores for example? I have a Best Buy and Tweeter close by, but I am not 100% confident with them. Since I am the type who likes to do it myself, can I do it in a weekend or am I better off just searching out an auto audio specialist?

Its not hard, do it yourself. I would also ditch the rear fill and put the extra money towards the components up front.

I see that you are from the philly area. I work at a Best Buy as an installer right over the bridge in new jersey. My roomate is the car audio manager at the Best Buy on Delaware Ave. All I can tell you is that the car is very easy to work on, I pulled mine apart in no time. I cant really vouch for the other Best Buys or Tweeters in the area, but the one I work at we have all very experienced and competant installers. Should you not want to do it yourself, I wouldn't go searching out a specialist per se. Its not like the car is a Bently, its a Ford and they are all put together the same...and easily taken apart.

Something as simple as a deck or deck+4 install can easily be done yourself. Of course, if you can get one of those free installation deals, then go for it. Why wouldn't you?

Why doesn't anyone seem to like the Shaker system? I think it is great!

I don't have the shaker in my car I have the base radio and it is very flat sounding

How about sub/amp installation? I am comfortable with the 4 speakers, just not sure on amp/sub placement (I know a custom box needs to be built for where I want it in my trunk) and where to place the tweeters.

I did most of this myself. (See thread link) I did have it installed, but the sub box needed to be shorter on one corner, so I cut it and made a new panel that was slanted. I am really happy with how it turned out. It is all really well hidden in the trunk and it didn't cost me much.
