auto or stick??

I love the manual but I am too crippled to drive one anymore. Automatics for me. And I have a handicapped permit. I get strange looks at times, a new GT and a handicapped permit. The car is easier to get in and out of than my wife's new Mariner. That's a fact. I saw a $2,000 rebate on Mustangs.

Auto w/Tune IMHO..

Just as fast, and you get to chill out in traffic or on hills...

With the tune, the throttle response is insane, and the shifts nice and stiff, I have a buddy who drives an 06 GT Stick Tuned+Cai, Loses to me every time, mostly because of the fact that the auto kicks it in gear much faster then a human can shift.. Also you can adjust to to match your engines powerband with a good dyno tune..

Just my 2 Cents.. Both are great.. I went auto for reasons above..

There are definitely advantages to both, I will agree. That being said, if your buddy is losing to you every time, I would hardly blame the transmission. Either you have a better tune, or he's just not good w/ a 5 spd., because assuming he's got decent tires, he can do something you can't....leave at 3,000 RPM!

He also can pray he hooks them up on 3k dumps either way, hes not a bad driver, he just cant row fast enough, most people cant, reaction time is just too precise, literally you need to hit every gear 100% perfect, and aside from slicks at 3k dump, running around 300RWHP will make it difficult to hook.. I have never 555's and they still have trouble hooking on auto launch..

i enjoy shifting my own gears, but if i wanted the most consistent times, i would get the auto. like previously stated, this auto with a tune is amazing. there is just something about rowing your own gears that appeals to me personaly. :nice:

either way, cant go wrong.

I would agree with rowing gears.... If i was doing a ton of "Turning", feel is everything, especially if your running on track..

Straight line ? Different story for me..

Since without heavy suspension mods i wouldn't really consider the stang a "Turn Track Car" it does pretty decent for how high it sits..

Either way ... Turns = Stick... drag Strip - Auto..

Now, this brings up a question I have:

The last drag race "purpose" car I had, was equipped with a TH-350 auto, that I would manually shift when racing. What do you all typically do with the auto in the new stang? Let it shift itself, or run through the gears manually?

damn you guys are makeing this hard hah. im a really good driver with a stick im not worried bout that at all.. im debaiting on a 05 black on black 9000 miles standard lowered only thing is when i went to test drive it non of the elertical sh#$ worked these are both at the same dealership we filled it up with gas still said empty the the e brake was on even though it was down it was wierd the air was working so they put it back n the shop going to drive it fri if it comes out, or a 06 whit n grey auto with 16000 miles and already has flows witch i heard the slp loudmoth on youtube and this one car screamed sounded so good.. whats a good tune to buy ?

A friend of mine has an '05 that the gas guage died on....Apparently it's common, and a TSB was issued by Ford, so once they replace it, you shouldn't have to worry about it.

If I was constantly going to the track then I'd probably have an auto.

My 5 speed is a DD and wouldn't have it any other way. I love being able to use the tranny to slow the car down instead of always using the brakes. I really don't mind having a stick shift in stop and go traffic either.

Also whenever I drive an auto I'm always reaching to shift and pressing the invisible clutch.

I do have a pet peeve with automatic drivers where I live. None of them seem to be able to pull up to a light and stop. They're always stopping 2 - 3 feet before it then they creep forward a bit and stop. Then they do it again. Then again. It's a pain in the ass for me to slip the clutch just to pull ahead a few inches over and over.
If I don't pull ahead the people behind me will honk. Drives me freakin nuts.
One of the times I didn't pull ahead a guy actually raged on me and got out of his car. I asked him why I should wear out my clutch because the morons in front of me don't know how to pull up to a line and stop. He then started mouthing me off so I got out of the car. After I got out and he saw I was bigger than him he ran back to his car and shut up. Lol - so many idiots where I live.

I love the 5 speed. It is all personal prefereance. Hills are NO problem and I LOVE holding the RPM's iin a certain gear with my SLP's. Auto's are a heck of a lot better than they have ever been. Neat identical 1/4 times, and not bad on gas. Although, the auto's do weigh more, and have many more moviing parts. Parts not there....can't fail.

Being that it's a preference only thing (which like everyone else has said it really is with as good as the new autos are) I personally prefer a manual over a automatic. Especially in a sports/muscle car. It just makes the whole driving experience a lot more fun... downshifting before hitting a turn, slowing down with the transmission, banging through the gears on a straightaway, and not to mention just being able to give it that quick rev whenever you want to hear that exhaust you put all that money into! It all really adds to the driving experience for me. Then again I also have another car i use for the daily commute so maybe that's something to consider too. But really even if this was my only car it would still HAVE to be a manual.

I have an auto with a canned tune and it was quick before but now it just flies through the gears....however I often catch myself manually shifting from a stop...which brings up another question.

how safe is manually shifting the new autos?

How many automatic motorcycles do you see for the same "FUN" reasons?
Sports / Muscle cars = Standard
Track = Auto's

auto vs manual is always a long debate. It all depends on which you prefer. If you're lazy like me, go with auto. I recently learned how to drive stick, its fun and all, but you gotta pay attention all the time (or at least for a beginner). If you need something to do with your hands then go for the stick.

Either you have a better tune, or he's just not good w/ a 5 spd., because assuming he's got decent tires, he can do something you can't....leave at 3,000 RPM!

My 07 GT Coupe has the automatic and 4.10 gears. I can leave at 3,000 rpm's, and actually more (3,800 to 4,000 rpm's), as I recently installed a Fuddle Racing Stall Converter. Now the car leaves very hard, just like dumping a clutch, and I can punch it rolling down the road and it instantly flashes to 3,800 to 4,000 rpm's - just like fanning a clutch in a stick car to get going. The only problem now is traction. Too much power getting to the ground now for the stock tires.

I love shifting for myself (my first five Mustangs were all stick shifts), but the new 5-speed automatics are awesome with minor tuning and a big stall converter. Super consistent at the dragstrip, and you can hold each gear individually if you road race and worry about unexpected shifts while taking the turns.

I had an automatic 04 GT, and now I've got a manual 07 GT. The manual is ten times more fun (of course the 3v is also faster)

It's VERY fun to drive 90% of the time. Parking lots suck. Get a 5 speed!
