Just one idea, but it could be the converter clutch is locking up on you. I think that would cause a similar issue. Does the engine stall when it stops moving?

Almost sounds like the parking latch inside it is stuck or something. If it were simply losing drive and the motor spins up, I'd say it's low on fluid or a bad converter, pump, or bands. But if it just stops and get stuck, really the only thing that could hold it securely internally on it would be the parking stop.

Basically any transmission problem like that would require accurate diagnosis, and then opening it up to fix the problem. I really wouldn't venture into automatic transmission repair. Your best bet would be to get it to a transmission shop and have them take care of it. I would have them install a "shift improver" kit in it and fill it with synthetic fluid while they are at it. Another option would be to get one from a local junkyard.

Yea, sorry I can't be of more help. Auto transmissions are complex beasts. I'm waiting for either of mine to grenade on me. The capri has 217,770 miles on it and it's the origonal C3 automatic. The 88 stang has 75K and a shift kit and fluid cooler so that one should be ok. Maybe it's time to put a T5 in? Just a thought. They're cheap and easy to find. Oh, where in PA are you?

Cool. I get up that way fairly often. I went to Penn College in Williamsport and my family used to have a cabin in Elk Township up there. What town are you in?
