HAH! I narrowed down my problem. When I installed long tube Tri-Y headers onto my 289 2V I had to remove two air hose lines that were installed from my passenger side exhaust manifold to my Automatic Choke System on my carburetor!

The way it works is that the choke is on when I start the engine cold. There's a Thermostatic Spring inside the choke that when cold, holds down a small piston inside the choke to keep the carburetor choked. I know... choke choke chokidy chokey choke... sorry.

Anyways, at all times, the two lines I disconnected pass exhaust fumes from the manifold to the choke and back again. As the engine warms up, the air gets hotter and starts to heat up the Thermostatic Spring so that it expands and slowly moves the small piston up to release the choke on my car.

Right now my car is idling around 1,400 RPMs as opposed to kicking down to 800 RPMs like it used to when the Automatic Choke System was in place.

With long tube headers I can't re-install the choke lines.. so what can I do here guys?? Do I need to buy another carburetor with a manual choke or something? What did you guys do when you installed headers on your cars??

I need this car to get on the road ASAP. Thanks in advance,
-Tim

:( Those tubes make the choke work.
you will eather have to put a manual choke on or
Fab up a adapter for the header to mount the heat tube back on.
the vac will draw warmed air to the choke housing that allows it to function properly.

A easy fix is to use some copper tubing to the choke from your header.
flatten out the end slightly where it can be strapped to the header tube.
leave a small hole so it will draw air and connect it to your choke.

How exactly does an electric choke work? I'll go and buy a 4bbl immediately since I'd like to upgrade and it would fix my problem. But don't I need to change my intake also? Then the problem becomes finding an intake that has the stupid hole for the emissions pump thing on the back.

Damnit,

If your talking about the egr valve, you can buy manifolds that will accept the egr.

The electric choke just hooks up to 12 volts and has an electric heater that heats the choke thermostat.

Same thing as a heated choke from your header pipes except you use a 12 volt power source that connects to an electric choke thermostat that gets heated from the electricity. You can try ordering one made for a newer carb, such as all Ford 2-Barrel carbs the chokes are interchangable, not to sure about VVs, but if you can get a hold of a later year carb from a junkyard try nabbing the the electric choke from the carb. Or you can try ordering one from where I work. www.recarbco.com or their phone number 925-439-7030. Good luck, be sure you have your application (year, car model, motor size, etc), oem # from the carb, and the type of carb it is if it isn't a stock carb. IE Holley, Edelbrock etc. Good luck.

Thanks for the patience and help, this is why I still come here everyday...

I ordered an exact fitting electric choke kit for my 2V from these guys:

http://www.carbsonly.com/carbs/carbschoke1.htm

Excellent customer service, I haven't even received the product yet and I'm ready to buy from them again... lol

I'll upgrade to a 4V carb when I save up for my 351W swap, I'm not dumping $500 into my 289 for a choke problem.

Thanks again,
-Tim
