HAH! I narrowed down my problem. When I installed long tube Tri-Y headers onto my 289 2V I had to remove two air hose lines that were installed from my passenger side exhaust manifold to my Automatic Choke System on my carburetor!
The way it works is that the choke is on when I start the engine cold. There's a Thermostatic Spring inside the choke that when cold, holds down a small piston inside the choke to keep the carburetor choked. I know... choke choke chokidy chokey choke... sorry.
Anyways, at all times, the two lines I disconnected pass exhaust fumes from the manifold to the choke and back again. As the engine warms up, the air gets hotter and starts to heat up the Thermostatic Spring so that it expands and slowly moves the small piston up to release the choke on my car.
Right now my car is idling around 1,400 RPMs as opposed to kicking down to 800 RPMs like it used to when the Automatic Choke System was in place.
With long tube headers I can't re-install the choke lines.. so what can I do here guys?? Do I need to buy another carburetor with a manual choke or something? What did you guys do when you installed headers on your cars??
