Quick question about auto's and gears.

I have been offered some 4.10's for a really-I-can't-pass-it-up price, so what else is needed for install? I read that I would need a chip or to have the comp. flashed due to auto's not being able to speed-cal?

Anyone with a 99+ Auto have some suggetions and or advice? Just basically need to know what kind of expense I'm looking at minus the install. Also, thanks in advance for any help/advice. This forum has been a HUGE help to me and a wealth of knowledge. :D

Yes you will need a chip or to get your stock computer flashed.

It will throw off your speedometer, but also it might cause your car to hit the rev limiter. The stock auto takes a certain amount of time to shift. The cpu will tell the car to shift and expect it to take x amount of seconds to make the shift. The gears cause the rpms to rise much faster and the tranny can't shift fast enough from when the cpu tells it to.

Both of these problems are easily cureable. All you need to do is increase the line pressure in the tranny and the shift will be firmer and faster. If you want to stay mostly stock you can get a Hypertech from in the low $300s that will cure both problems. You could also have a chip tuned and installed, this will increase horsepower n/a by about 10. These prices vary and think about which direction you want your car to take.

The 4.10s will have you running all over 5 speeds and make your car an absolute beast. I have 3.73s going in within the next two weeks. The keep the speedo accurate I'm buying a Tweecer, it's a chip that you tune yourself using a laptop. It's very cool, but a bit more than you'll need.

Good luck.

If yours is a 99 with 20k+ miles, I'd get the complete overhaul kit with shims, crush sleeve, pinion seal, pinion bearing and royal purple gear oil and other kit stuff. I'd do the complete overhaul kit. I did my 410s @ 5k miles so there was no need for all the extras. Think it's around 90.00 but not sure. If its 5 yrs old, don't trust your rear-end to chance. If their's any whine when completed, backlash is off most likely. Should be quiet when completed. I paid 300 for install. 200 is cheap and 600 is high. Actually, your installer will know exactly what you'll need. Some only replace what they are comfortable with while others replace more to be safe. Bottom line. tt your installer for what they want you to get.

For speedo correction, I bought the superchips microtuner last july. My vortech blower will be here in the next day or 2 and I have to sell it for a custom tuned chip.
The SC tuner is sooo convenient. Change settings for shift firmness and shift points and other settings in about 3 minutes. If you don't like a setting, tweak it and retry. No sending chips in to have reburned. If you kick up the shift points a little, when it shifts to 2nd, that chirp becomes a nice long screech. Great product and it bumps up timing slightly but not as much as a tiing adjuster. I got it ebayed if interested..... well talk atcha later.

PS.... Aluminum drive shaft is great at the same time too. 8#s Lighter rotational mass and makes revs smoother and faster throttle response...

There will be some things about the 410's you may not like like higher rpms @ 80+ but the things you like about them will overcompensate for em. Def. great mod...

you can now buy a speedo gear...I bought one and its on the way so if it don' t work I'll pass it off to a friend....4.10's are mean as hell in an auto...I just put in 3.73's cuz I have to make a decent amount of business trips sometimes but as soon as I get another car 4.10's will hit it...

Gears

I use a hypertec. The chip deal was a nightmare. Dallas mustang kept playing with my trans line pressure and never got it right; they did a great job with the gears and let me return the chip.

I really like the hypertec.

You will certainly want what they call an "install kit" which includes everything like shims, etc. You should definitely replace those because once you start taking your gears apart, they become weak and it is best to spend the extra $90. Other than that, you will probably want some synthetic differential lubricant to keep your gears lasting longer. As far as the computer, you could go either way. I would recommend a chip because you can do more. I guess it really depends on what other mods you are going to add. If you're not looking at anything more in the near future, a programmer is probably the way to go. Otherwise, I would look into a chip. Dennis Reinhart of Reinhart Ford in Florida did my chip is supposed to be one of the best when it comes to 99+ automatics. Mine dropped .20 of a second on 1/4 with the chip alone. Good luck whichever way you decide to go. :nice:

Speedo gears do not work on the newer mustangs. Digital signals only since '99, I believe.

Just got my car from ford dealer yesterday for a gear swap to 4.10. It started last friday and i really thought it was going to be my worst nightmare but it turn out more than just fine. :D

My car have 30K on it and i should have get the kit with shims and seal and....
I look at my invoice and this is what i see:

1 seal ( guess its the driveshaft one) 11$ CAN
2 seal ( wheel axles ) 8$
1 additive 5$
3 oil 70$
2 shims 45$ (23$+22$)
2 hours labor 131$
Total 270$ can witch is about 200$ US

all bearings including wheels bearing Warranty :nice:
speed sensors Warranty :nice:
all 4 hours labor to get the main bearing Warranty :nice:
Time for tech to retune car with Hypertech Free :nice:

Work done under warranty worth about 500$.

You have a 99, so be careful with thoses damn speed sensors that are probably stock in place. They have to be remove to do the job. If they are stock, you ll have top break them to continu and they cost around 70$ each plus 1 hour labor. Ford dealer did it on warranty. Can you imagine that i have only 1 day left on my warranty :D

Hypertech is working fine also. Talk about a great ford dealer. Must help that the tech who did the job is a member of the local mustangclub.

This is why I love these forums...Great, timely replies and awesome advice. Thanks everyone and hopefully one day I can help out a fellow Mustang owner... :flag:

I have a 2002 GT auto tranny- installed 4.10 gears at 19,000 miles with a custom JMS chip. Installed by a local race shop. What a difference it made. I'm now at 46,000 miles,I drive 64 miles round trip 5 days a week to work I run 93 octane, fill up 2 x's a week! But oh what fun it is. To answer your ? right at $900.00 for the gears labor and custom chip all installed. The guy that I used is honest but not cheap he's had atleast 4 cars featured in MM&FF mag one being his wifes and another Bullitt that won at a shoot out in NJ. The biggest money is keeping gas in the tank. Oh well such a small price to pay for fun...
