This might seem like a strange problem, I've never heard of this happening to anyone, but when my car is in park and I go to push the buttom to put the car ('02 automatic) in drive or reverse or whatever the case may be, I need to use two hands to get the thing to go in. When the car is in gear, the button goes in no problem, like normal. For some reason, it is only when going from park to one of the gears that it is stuck or something, it is quite the annoyance. I was wondering if anyone had ever heard of this, if it is a common problem, or something along those lines. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A a strange matter of coincedence my wifes now 3rd 98 mustang V6 does the same thing, we have owned 4 mustangs all 97 or 98 and this is the first one to have these shifter issues, no one seems to have a true fix, but if you wiggle the shifter up and down a little it may give a bit easier, it doesnt take much just a light shimmying if you will forward and back while trying to depress the butto, i haven't had many problems but my wife still hasen't quite got the technique down, how it helps a little

No problem on the double post. I have tried moving it as I hit the button, but it still won't budge. I will try moving it like you said, up and down to see if thats the exact way to make it work...i don't think you can really take the thing apart either to see what the deal is, and I am not sure what the replacement of the shifter would entail. This just baffles me as to why it would work while in any gear other than park, should have gotten a stick, lol. Thanks for the tip, i'll let you know if it works for me.

Same thing happened with my 95 GT. I replaced the shifter cable for $200 and the problem was fixed.
