Autozone Code Scanners not Work

That's why the plug under your hood didn't work. The scanner you were using is for OBD II! Get an OBD I scanner or use a paper clip. Use plugs under hood on passenger side. Remember, there are two plugs that you'll have to plug in. A large one and a small one. Once again, forget about the under dash plug. If you don't believe us .... pull out your Hayne's or Chilton's manual & look for yourself ... or do a search online.

So the plug under the dash should have worked then? The plug in the engine bay doesn't look like it would even fit the same scanner plug.

If you search around, you should be able to find a ford OBD-I scanner fairly cheap. I think I got mine for less than $40 online. It runs on a 9V battery and reads both the engine codes and the ABS codes.

Here's one I found through froogle.google.com:

Notice how much different the plug is for that one than the OBD-II scanner the guys at the stores tried to use. Most stores in my area don't even want to (or have the ability to) read OBD-I codes anymore.

FWIW, our 5.0's have two ports in the engine bay, which both work with OBD-I readers. One is engine codes (on the passenger side) and the other is ABS codes (on the driver's side, near the fuse box).

PS:
Don't be an idiot (like me the first time) and forget to turn your car off when you're done reading codes. Otherwise you'll have a code and a dead battery :)

Nah, you weren't an idiot, you were just elated with being able to read your own codes and got excited when all was well and forgot to turn the key. :D

Someone with your signature is most likely not an idiot.

Peace
