Axle Bearing Question

Does anybody know which side of the bearing faces out (towards the oil seal)? I noticed (after I pulled both sides, of course) that the side of the race that is stamped with the part number, etc., has a slightly larger radius on the shoulder, than the unstamped side.

Does it matter? The Haynes manual is no help at all.

Thanks

I have not done my rear end yet, however in my trade there is a rule of thumb about bearings(industrial electric motors), "WHEN IN DOUGHT, NUMBERS OUT" . It most likly does not apply, just thew it out there.
Dry fit them to the axel first, this will point you in the right direction.

I'm seriously considering the "numbers out" approach. That is a tried-and-true rule of thumb.

I just got the replacement bearings from NAPA. The 2 sides are closer to being the same, but there is still a little difference.
