Does anybody know which side of the bearing faces out (towards the oil seal)? I noticed (after I pulled both sides, of course) that the side of the race that is stamped with the part number, etc., has a slightly larger radius on the shoulder, than the unstamped side.

Does it matter? The Haynes manual is no help at all.

Thanks

Good one! I've never paid attention to that and just put 'em on. Bump for you! BTW, how's the weather down there in mid-state?

Strange. Anytime I've replaced axle bearings they were the same radius on either side. Try test fitting the bearings on the axles first, that may tell you how it goes it.
PS ... the all Indiana thread.

Cloudy, and in the mid-70's. Supposed to rain.
A good day for working on the Pony.

If I don't hear otherwise, I guess I'll just make sure I put 'em both on the same way, and not worry about it.

Yeah, I know. I answered his question and asked him a question too. Sorry to have offended you.

I have not done my rear end yet, however in my trade there is a rule of thumb about bearings(industrial electric motors), "WHEN IN DOUGHT, NUMBERS OUT" . It most likly does not apply, just thew it out there.
Dry fit them to the axel first, this will point you in the right direction.

I'm seriously considering the "numbers out" approach. That is a tried-and-true rule of thumb.

I just got the replacement bearings from NAPA. The 2 sides are closer to being the same, but there is still a little difference.

Just for future reference, I pulled the bearings out of the car today - numbers in. I really doubt that it matters.

They "numbers in" on both sides.
