For those of you that have changed out your rear gears; did you also replace the stock differential cover "axle girdle" with an aftermarket one and if so, why? Is it necessary or at least a good idea? Ford Racing says that it increases ring and pinion gear life.

I added the axle girdle and bearing cap studs on my Marauder, which has the same 8.8" rear-end that the Mustang has. I went with 4.10:1 gears and am considering supercharging the car at some point. Because of that I thought it made sense. Do you absolutely need the girdle? Probably not, especially if you stay n/a. But for a couple hundred bucks it's worth the peace of mind, IMO. If you're considering getting gears you might as well have the studs and girdle put in at the same time.

That's what I thought. Since my stang is supercharged and I'm going to change out the gears anyway, I might as well go ahead and do it. Thanks for the input.

You need a panhard relocation kit to install a girdle, like this one from BMR Fabrication.
