Axle Question 5 lug

Axle and Locker Question

So I am trying to figure out what has been done to my car. I bought it several years ago from a guy who gave me documentation on what had been done to it, or so I thought. He didn't do the work on it, but had been taking to a new mod shop in St. Louis. Needless to say, as I have went to replace items I have found out that the mods that were supposed to be done were, but not always with the parts listed on the sheet that was givin to me.

So now my question, the car has a 5 lug swap with Licoln rotors in the front and back. I thought that it still had stock axles, and had the flipped Licoln rotors in the back, but now I have new 17 x 9 wheels (with what I thought was the right backspacing) that I am want to put on and they stick out to far. So I tore out the axles to measure them, I am suspecting now that I have Licoln axles. They measure just shy of 30 1/2". I am measuring from the front axle hub to the end of the shaft, is that the correct way to measure them??

I have been reading on here about axles.
Stock= 29 5/32"
SN95= .75" longer
Licoln= 1.25" longer than stock

If I am doing my math correctly I have the Licoln axles. Can some on please confirm for me.

I have a locker question too, but it will have to wait until tomorrow, because I have picts needed to post.

Ok guys here are some pict of my rear diff. I am not that experienced with gears and lockers, so can you tell me if this is a locker? (Auburn)... maybe??? I was told it had a locker in it. I have been comparing picts with others on a here and other sites, mine does look different that what I think is stock.

Are you guys buying Friction modifier at a parts store, I can't find it here? I am putting synthetic back in it so do I need it with synthetic fluid?

Finnally does, anybody know the about my original question. Axles length?

Thanks for the help.

Definitely looks like an Auburn.

You should be able to find friction modifier at any parts store. If not the Ford dealer should carry the stuff.

Most synthetic gear oils do not require friction modifier. Check the bottle of your chosen selection to be sure. FWIW Auburn Gear recommends a non-synthetic gear oil.

Not sure about the axle length.

Thanks for the conformation on the locker and the heads up on the synthetic, I just confrimed that on aurburn's website 80W 90 and friction modifier. Guess I will try Ford locally for the modifier or order it, parts store here don't carry it.

Can you take a picture of the rear brakes themselves? I'll be able to tell you if it's the stock lincoln or modified lincoln setup just by looking.

Need pics of the axle brackets specifically. But take some from different angles.

Most likely, if 17x9's stick out too much, they are Lincoln axles. If you get some fox lenght axles, you can modify the brakes yourself to suck them in.

The rears are for sure not flipped. You have to remove the dust/splash shield to flip them. It took me a couple of hours to get all the grinding and such done on mine to modify them. Plus they were much cheaper than the SN95 setup at the time.

Regarding the ebrake, I fixed mine to work by bending the bracket on the caliper to clear the lower control arm mount. Along with modifying the ebrake handle, the brakes work just fine. Here are some pics if you want to use the flipped brackets. Stock on the left, bent on the right. I cut the lips at about 2 and 9 o'clock in picture 3 so the brackets would bend:

And one of the whole ebrake assembly installed:

Oh, and on the fronts, I think the rotor hat is a bit taller on the SVO/Mark VII rotors since the SVO wheels have a deeper backspacing due to the wider rear. Kind of like the 93 Cobra wheels and rotors. Don't know for sure, but it makes sense to me especially if the wheels are sticking out.

Good luck!

Hmmmmmm lincoln axle shafts in the back????? I never heard of doing that.If you continue to have problems get 2 DRIVER SIDE axle shafts out of a mid to late 80's ranger,thats what i did my 5 lug con. with and iv had no problems.

Thanks for the help guys!

Not sure what I am going to do to fix my problem yet, may just flip the lincolns over for now. Not sure about the front though I am going to have to mount the 255s I have on the wheel and see what it looks like. I put the wheels, (which already had 275s on them) on the car just to see how they fit. Already knowing the the tires were to big, but I was worried about the wheel clearance at the time, just haven't had the 255s mounted yet, but I wanted to stay with 275 out back.

The problem with the front, and the new wheels, is the wheels themselves look to be out to far, say 1/2". trbkrb what tire and wheel combo do you run?

Here are some old picts of the car and the old wheels. They are 16x8 Elites backspacing is 5 3/8". Tires are 225/50 and 245/50. The chrome is chiped and coming off and I wanted to replace them. Hard to tell with these picts, but even with these tires I thought that the wheels always stuck out a little to far in the back.

What MC would I need for the SN95 setup?

I have 17x8 Bullitt wheels front and back, with the stock 245/45/17 tires right now. I don't like how the rears are tucked in. I originally planned to use 17x9 wheels, thus the flipped brake setup. I had 255/40/17s on it before and they fit great. I plan to either get some 17x9 replica wheels for the back and 275 tires, or go the SN95 axle route and try to use the Mark VII brakes. One guy on Corral (RedSE) modified his Mark VII brakes (he had them machined down) to fit the SN95 axles, and I might try that since I already have the brakes and a set of SN95 axles in the garage.

Here is an old pic with the 255's

And a rear view straight on with the 255s, stock width, on 17x8 wheels.

Here's a shot of my car back when i ran Mark 7 front rotors. It's an 17x8 Cobra wheel with a 235 tire on it.
Offset.jpg

Pretty tucked in. Later when i swapped to SN95 disks up front, the offset hasn't changed.

If you go to SN95 rear disks, you may or may not need to change the MC. it all depends on the pedal feel. The rear calipers are 38mm pistons while the lincoln setup uses 54mm pistons. The smaller calipers may give you a harder pedal. A 94-95 GT MC may work for you, but it's hard to say if you keep the stock Mark 7 front setup instead of swapping to SN95 up front as well.

WHat 17x9 wheels are you running, and what is their offset and BS?

My new wheels are STEEDA Ultra Lites. I got a good deal on them from a guy $600 for 1 year old wheels not a scratch on them with almost new 275/40 Nittos mounted on them. Backspacing is 6" not sure the offset. I had been talking with Almostsock and they are the same wheel as the ROHs and that is what he runs, but he also has a BAER setup for brakes. I know mine stick way out compared to his, even on the front, Refering to the wheels not the tires. I found some 255s locally new for cheap, that is what I want to use on the front.

trbkrb I noticed in those picts your shock is turned sideways compared to mine. Is that part of the Lincoln Flip or am I looking at the pict wrong. I don't remeber reading about a shock flip.

It is mentioned somewhere. I think I got it from Matt Bobbitt. It give a hair more clearance, and I believe it is actually the way the older Fox shocks are mounted (like pre 85 or so). I tried it just to make sure it would have enough clearance for the ebrake, but I have had a problem with the bolts coming loose. Probably needs some locktite or double bolts. I had actually taken the wheel off to tighten the bolt when I took that picture. I don't think it is necessary, and I will probably put the bracket back on when I replace my control arms in a few weeks.
