I have a really nooob question

I am replacing the axles in my 98 GT (im doing it myself to save money, or better yet, cannot afford the labor as of right now) and I stumped on which axle to get. The 28 spline or the 31 spline. Ive heard of both of them from people talking about them, however, if im not mistaken the 28 spline are basically the stock ones correct? I do have 3.73 gears if that makes any difference. I'm sorry for this nooob question again, its my first time working on the rear end.

I'm a noob so I can't recommend much, BUT, yes, the OE axles are 28 spline. Aftermarket ones will obviously be a little stronger. I would just get the 31 splines, but that's me.

You can't just get 31 spline axles to replace the 28s. You'll need the differential carrier too (i.e. the side gears into which the axle splines mesh...)

Why do you think the 28s are inadequate? How much horsepower/torque does your car make? Do you drag race it? Do you use slicks on a prepped track and launch at high RPM by side-stepping the clutch?

If not, 28s are probably fine.

BTW, why are you replacing the axles? Are the bearing surfaces damaged?

I put down 330hp/ 380 tq. I dont think the 28 spline is inadequate. The driver side has kinda gone bad, so I decided to just replace both just to have fresh axles in the rear. however, if im going to need more for the 31 spline, i dont wanna really do that. I just want a simple fix thats OEM. The axles before have done fine for 180k miles i think. And i have beaten on her.

and its damaged where the axle meets the rear end. theres a groove in the axle thats causing this grinding. I dunno how that happens, but it did.
