I'm trying to remove the axle shaft on the driver's side (8" axle, open diff) to get the last disc brake on (Well I'm not right now cause it's raining...just to ensure I don't finish the car I suppose. Well, the passenger side shaft came right out but this one will not budge. I tried putting a drum on backwards and beating it witha hammer, but no luck.

sometimes you need to beat on it alot to get it out. they make whats called an axle puller for that. it bolt to the axle bolts and has a slide hammer that pops them out. good luck

Geez. I've beat on the thing for 30 minutes straight at this point...no luck. I wonder if autozone rents out axle pullers then...

Had the same problem on a Ford pickup. I shop at Autozone alot and the manager let me borrow their rental for free: had that axle out in less than 2 minutes!
