Yes it will run OK without a tune, but the Ford Racing alphabet cams are old as dirt. There are tons of better cams on the market.

A custom cam is not that much more. I still have yet to see a post titled:

"Idle surging issues with my custom ground cam!"

But I have seen plenty of:

" Idle surging issues with my (B), (E) (F), cam!"

Mike likes to make jokes but it was the B-cam that killed Chuck Norris.

He's ok now though.

Someone made a funny skit about the b cam years ago. Wonder if that's still around

Like previously said, there are better cams. If you are on a budget, find one used. Roller cams don't really wear out. Trick Flow Stage 1, Small Comp Cams Extreme Energy, and everyone loves the old Steeda #18 and #19 cams. There are a couple of guys on here with GT40p heads, maybe some of them will chime in with what they think is best. It's not just a matter of making power, the old letter cams from Ford are a single grind, and they have some driveability issues too.

If you already bought the cam, and you're installing it no matter what we say, why are you asking these questions?

I misread your post, I apologize.

You really should reconsider using a B cam. Like others have stated, it's outdated, and there are better ones out there. I'm doing a similar engine combo, and plan on using the Anderson Ford Motorsport N-412 cam.

You can run the B cam without tuning. It's outdated and won't have the best street manners or produce the most power for the combo but will work fine. If you end up with a surging idle it's from another reason. That Anderson cam is a good one and so is comp cam 264-270hr either works great imo

Usually the 1.7 rockers don't cause issues. Usually get more problems from bigger valves than more lift. Test everything though, playdoh is 50 cents at Walmart.

Usually surging idle is from a dirty iac valve, tps sensor out of range, sometimes from another sensor, vacuum leak,or possibly a few other things I can't think of lol.

There is a sticky in tech for trouble shooting if you are having a problem.
