hey guys,

I finally bit the bullit and bought a hammer shifter for my 2001 Mustang GT. I installed it after i ripped the center console's ebrake boot and took that all apart. lets just say that installing the shifter was a somewhat piece of cake after that. its bolted in, and wired the electrics up. OD light works, LED on the shifter works to telling me what gear I am in etc...

Now here is my problem, I for the life of me can not get the transmission shift cable to install right.

I installed the shifter cable and I am able to get into all the gears. P - R - N - D - 2 - 1.
but the car WONT START in P, I turn the key and the gauges do a sweep, then nothing. if I put the car into N the car starts no problem.

shouldn't the car start in P?

Finally the interlock connection. it doesnt seem to do anything regardless of what gear I am in, keys in or out of the ignition, foot on brake etc... Just so i am sure I am installing this part correctly.... I put the car in park put the interlock cable on the hook. is it supposed to be tight, or just hang there loose? and get tight when pulled in any other gear? Does any one have pictures?

THANKS!!!

Well i took it to the shop, (Mustang Magic) and they fixed it.

the problem was the cable is just literally a millimeter too short. so when you put it in park, the spring on the transmission does not fully engage. so you just got to tap it a little harder into park. then when you go start the car its fine.

so while i was there i got gears too! woot 3.73!

That's strange. I've never heard of the trans cable being too short. I'm glad you got it fixed, though.

I've actually had that same problem. Did you try adjusting the linkage at the gear actuator end where the bolt is fastened in the sliding loop at the end of the cable? I know if you change that too much you'll f up the actual gear selection - I just dont see how you can make it longer from the shifter end.

Here is what happened......

When I put the transmission gear into park then I would put the shifter into park. Then I would link them with the cable. Doing it in neutral, was a problem because everytime I got the cable on one end, i would pull on it to put it on the other end and it would shift out of the gear i needed it to be in.

I would then put the loop part of the cable on the shifter and then the extended oval shaped loop part on the transmission bolt. Everytime I did that the cable would pull ever so slightly back a little bit (on the transmission) , just enough that the cable would just move slightly out of park (hence a slight millimeter of pull). This was the reason i couldn't start the car in park but i could shift through all the gears.

I also think one of the major problems, looking back on hind sight, was that my car had this black coating of rust proofing under it. kinda like that stuff you get in truck liners. I bet if i scraped some of that off the bigger oval loop. It would have given me the millimeter of clearance I needed.

Yeah, i see what you're saying. I've just been avoiding it because the stuff is right behind my mid-pipe - i doubt i can do much about it like you're saying. Glad to know it wasn't just me error in installing tho.
