Backfire releated to timing?

First off, Id like to mention that I changed fuel brands and it has helped. I guess all gas isnt the same, like i use to think. I always filled up with 76 fuel (91 octane). One day I needed gas badly so I stopped and got Chevron. The car felt more responsive, and the backfiring was minimized. After a nice warmup, it feels more responsive. When its cold, it doesnt wanna run. I shift, hit the gas, and it will feel like it doesnt realize my fuggin foot is on the gas for a split second (TPS problem perhaps??)

Now heres the point of the thread. I checked the timing, and to my astonishment, its at 18*. I assumed since its not pinging, it should be fine. But my friend told me thats way too much, and is probably the root of the backfiring problem. My other friends race car isnt even that advanced in timing, haha. What should I back it down to? 14*? I know how to check it, just not to adjust it. Im sure its easy, just wanna make sure how to do it before i blow things up. So which way do I turn the distributer to back off timing?

Thanks guys

i think you're a retard. hi chris! hahaha.

anyways..

you checked timing with the spout connector out right?

18 degree's isnt too much, just make sure you run the appropriate octane to avoid pinging and detonation...

as far as backfiring, when was the last time you put new plugs and wires on? I had a horrible backfire and it was all because of some stupid splitfire plugs I had put in...
