Backfire

Just wondering why my car almost always ( 3 out of 5 times) backfires when i run it hard from first to second gear..... i usually shift around 5500 and i get a backfire and ive been told i shoot some flames from my exhaust. I run Sunoco regular fuel.. whatever octane that is (89 i think)......my car has 60k on it.... not having cats probally doesnt help but can anyone tell me exactly why this happens and if its something to be concerned about.

Sounds like extra fuel being ignited instead of burned off by the cats. If anything its running a little rich, as long as its not backfiring through the intake then I wouldnt sweat it too much... Someone correct me if im wrong please.

Ever seen a boosted car shoot flames out of the pipe? Pretty cool looking.

yeah, i noticed mine pops when i shift to 3rd gear.....only one pop....i just noticed it yesterday when i took out my bother for a drive....he noticed it too.....not too loud but its there....
