Has anyone heard of ring and pinion backlash starting out at .003 and working itself out. Rather than blowing up?

I have heard at least on person getting away with it. Most of the posts say noise come from too much backlash like .020+. I just don't want it to lock up on me or something.

Please post your experience.

.008 to .015 is the spec.. I try for around .010

.003 is way to tight and when the gears heat up I see trouble...

Like perkys stang said I shoot for .010 also but spec is .008 to .015. Now ring gear runout should be less than .003. Not sure if that's what your talking about. I'd start over and double check all clearances. My .02. Good luck

Yea, I was talking about the backlash between the ring and pinion. I have no clue what my runout is. I did sand the ring and the land for burrs though.

By the way I tried the "match the pinion head with shims method" the first pinion setup and it was way off. I was changing from 2.73 to 3.27s and had to add .008 shim for a total thickness of .040 to mach the 2.73s thickness. I installed it and the patern was off. Then I went to and still have .028 and I think that is still maby .006 to much but the patern is much better.

FYI to those thinking of doing your own. I have read that reusing the factory pinion shim is a popular choice and as it turns out would have worked out ok.

My R&P backlash

thanks for your input. Any others feel free to chime in with your thougts or experiences.

I agree .003 is too tight. I like them on the tight side. .008 is perfect although I have set them at .007 without any issues.

That is way too tight. As much as trouble as it is, take it apart and get it within spec.
