I've been noticing a lot of noise coming from the transmission lately and am slowly losing hope in it being a bad T/O bearing. It started off fairly quiet but is now starting to sound like a power steering pump low on fluid. When revving the car in neutral with the clutch out the sound gets louder with an increase in RPMs and goes away when pushing in the clutch. But now it whines while driving and each gear makes a different pitched whine. The only gear that sounds normal is 4th. Moving the shifter left and right while in neutral also changes the pitch of the whine. So basically It makes a loud whine in N,1,2,3,5, and reverse. But the second i put it in 4th it stops. I'm open to any suggestions of what it may be. Car is an 04 Mustang GT with the TR3650. Thanks

To me it sounds like you've got a bad cluster shaft bearing. In all gears but 4th, power flows into the input shaft, down to the cluster shaft and then back up to the output shaft through the selected gear. In 4th though, the input and output shafts are locked together (1:1) meaning the cluster shaft is unloaded and less likely to make noise. (Though this doesn't really explain the noise in 'N' unless it's just audible because of the lack of road noise and the noise is much louder under load in 1, 2, 3 etc...)

If the trans was ever serviced for the grind issue it may not have been re-assembled correctly. Check the fluid but I suspect you're looking at some bearing work...
