The only time I ever had to have a driveshaft balanced was because the driveshaft itself was destroying my U-joints. The drivshaft was out of balance and I was going through U-joints every 5000 miles. Replace the U-joints and don't worry about it. If you still feel a vibration then have the driveshaft checked.

i might not have it balanced but i would keep the relative positions of the halves of the DS and the relationship of the DS to pumpkin. it costs nothing and can help alleviate possible issues.

if for some reason the DS is out of balance, i would have it dynamically balanced (as opposed to balancing it out of the car). this balances the entire rotating assembly in the rear of the car.

Sometimes the driveshafts can get bent or distorted over long periods of time... I tired to have mine rebalanced after it started to vibrate like crazy, but the mechanic said it was bent and it'd need to be changed out... just got no cash for tha FR aluminum one

DS's getting bent is pretty common CJ - dont feel bad.

a driveline shop can balance the DS. a dynamic balance will balance the entire assembly, vs a static (DS only) balance, which does not take the adjoining rotating components into consideration. not unlike getting a wheel (only) balanced and then throwing some tires on and getting a shimmy from imbalance. same for the entire driveline (with the DS being like a wheel and getting the weights added to it).
