Bang,bang,clang Clang!!!

so?.......some of you know i just ordered all my stuff for a sc,was going to install it this weekend.....but?

going to work tday?,stop at a light,let clutch out and clang clang from the valve cover!!!!!....of coarse hey?....peeeeeerfect timing!

was supposed to be a well built 331 with afr heads,guess i blew a valve,keeper or somthing?...what am i looking at here guys????...ive done just about everything around the motor and car but never did any internal stuff since hight school.

and im done with this engine builder,3rd issue in 2 summers!

now i shut it off right away,started it for anothe 10 sec to see what was up?..now should i bother starting it and getting a vid too show you guys before i take it appart?

I would replace all of the studs after a call to ARP to discuss this one...
I've broken some valve train parts before as well and it turned out to be failed heat treating during the manufacturing process... While that stud should have never broken I doubt that you did any damage to the engine itself. I say a set of stud and a new lock and you should be good to fire this thing back up.

Can you remove a few more rockers and take a picture of the wear pattern of the valve stems? I'm just curious to see how the pushrod length looks in relation to the valve train geometry

ok will do thank you...could it be anything to do with engine builder?,wrong lenth?...because now im scared of the rest for sure!....sc was going in this weekend!...lol...i should take it somwhere else maybe to get it looked over first??

I would go with 84ttop on this one, looks like a simple stud breakage. He makes a good point of checking the other valve stems for wear patterns. It could be a pushrod issue or simply bad luck on the ARP part.

ill pull another one off?.....what should i look for on the pushrod?
setting the lash im gona second guess myself!...lol

Look at the top of the valve for abnormal or a "non" centered pattern. or just take pics and post for observation.

There are a thousand "how too" articles on setting lash. All basically tell you to do it the same way.

Don't be so quick to blame the builder until all info is on the table. Sometimes parts just fail.

This is what your looking for as far as valve wear marks.

Eh, you've got stud mount rockers, so pushrod length is important, but not as critical as pedastal mount rockers. Stud mount allow for a little adjustment either way. Roll it thru and look for push rod binding just to be sure.. also look for coil bind on your valve springs. That will tear stuff up too. If the spring bottoms out, something is going to give.

ok so this is what i got...took another one off,and they both look identical to this,looks good to me?..my buddy took it to the speed shop where im gona tune my car and he said it happends somtimes,bad stud,but he also said that i should have 7/16 studs and rockers for my combo

Are you sure those are ARP studs? The AFR's are notorious for breaking their stock 3/8" studs. They do not come with ARP studs and the stockers are usually too short. I upgraded mine to longer ARP 7/16".
