Barn find score

Carefully remove those white face gauges. They are usually just laid over the original gauges. Hope, and pray that the correct cluster is under there.

Hopefully you find one of these.

That is an absolute WIN! Be careful not to scratch the faces. Carefully clean them up with a little mild soap and water. The center piece is generic and not SSP specific. You can find one on ebay.

Chris

One more thing. You probably know this but just in case, the only SSP part of that cluster is the speedometer. You could actually find a nicer cluster and swap in that 160 MPH speedometer if you chose to.

Chris

Very interesting that he had the 140 mph face just laid on top of the 160 face. There's no way it was giving accurate speeds.

FHP sold them at auction painted in their colors. I can't imagine that to be true.

I looked it up. There was a law passed in 1998.

321.03 Imitations prohibited; penalty.—Unless specifically authorized by the Florida Highway Patrol, a person in the state shall not color or cause to be colored any motor vehicle or motorcycle the same or similar color as the color or colors so prescribed for the Florida Highway Patrol.

Well I'm no lawyer but if it came painted that way when you bought it, and you don't repaint it you did not 'color or cause to be colored' that motor vehicle.
Make sure you explain that to Jimmy from India when he calls you for that extended warranty.

You're only a few hours north of me. If you decide to give it a try, let me know, I'll bring you a cake with a file in it.

I think it's kinda shocking that someone layed those gauge faces over stock gauges.
White gauges are crap in general (I know I tried it and they look wrong and light terrible in a fox) but I can't even imagine how bad they lit up with gauges behind them.

I like the SSP cars, it's just a weird position in foxbody owning. They all need to be fixed, restoring it I guess is an option, modding it takes originality away from it. So it's kinda caught in the middle.

To be clear, i'd definitely own one. I think it would have to be a solid cop car color when done (states do indeed have rules with the doors, but who knows if they really enforce them, i'd guess if you did it up as a police car, just take to all the police run car shows and hob nob with the police) and this may sound crazy, but i feel like the they need 10 holes.

It may not be a 'cop' car, ssp cars where used in different scenarios, they had them in the air force for pulling gliders type planes down the runway, that's what I read years ago, a 'cop' car will have several things unique like the speedometer will say calibrated on the face and a few other things I can't remember.
@FoxChasis may know more facts and if you go to foxchasis.com you can decode the buck tag or vin.
The SSPs weren't used to pull gliders, they were used as chase vehicles for the USAF U2 Dragonlady. A pilot would follow behind and to the side of the aircraft as it attempted to land and broadcast on the radio the distance from the main landing gear to the runway/ground. For example; "ten feet, six feet, four feet, two feet, touchdown." Other vehicles have been used for example the LT1 Camaro and currently the Dodge Charger.

that makes more sence, couldn't figure how a glider would get up to altitude with the car pulling it, it was a long time ago I read about it and remember a u2 being mentioned.

This is the cluster that came factory in my 89 " ultra light " GT convertible. Don't know where the name came from. Insurance said it was a Cobra...Ford said it was a special edition. I say its BS because I've never seen another one. I still have the factory fiberglass trunk lid with the vin stamped in it.

Come to think of it....those holes look like convertible hinge holes in your trunk. The lids are the same other than those holes...and the convertibles use a different hinge spring
assembly.

Good luck convincing a judge of that. The system is rigged against you. If the cop said you did it, you can pretty much guarantee you are getting stuck with some sort of fine.

A 1998 law makes sense. Most of those cars were auctioned out before 1998.

There were SSP cars used for all sort of things. I had a friend who got one that was purchased as a Customs and Border Patrol car. Green car, never had any sort of lights or special equipment in it. It was just bought so some Customs agent could drive to and from different offices.

I've flown with quite a few people that flew the U2 in the past. They described the experience of landing it with 2 chase cars as quite exhilarating.

A law that makes sence?
Not many of those.
But then, most only apply when caught!

Let me re word that. It makes sense that there were so many FHP cars sold to the public at auction in the original gold and black paint scheme, because the law was passed after they were sold.

This is what I would consider an add on offense. You get pulled over for another offense, and get a second citation for your paint job. Then force you to defend both citations con currently. I mean, that's how they got Exotic Joe.

I was thinking the same thing on the trunk lid holes. It looks like where the latch mounts the trunk lid on the convertibles.

Chris

it’s possible it’s from a different car. This had a different hood on it, too. Just thought it was something that set it apart. Though looks like lid was painted with original paint (hinges/paint line up like from factory). A lot of odd things with this one..

I don’t know WHY someone would overlay but they did. And did a hack job of a wiring scenario. I don’t think this car ran for years... if ever with the current engine.
